UNOPPOSED Munyenyembe Is New MUZ President

OSWELL Munyenyembe is the new Mine-workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) president.
Mr Munyenyembe ascended to the helm of the MUZ presidency after going through unopposed in the elections conducted yesterday during the supreme council meeting held at Katilungu House in Kitwe.
The position of general secretary previously held by Mr Munyenyembe went to Nkole Chishimba, who also went through unopposed.
Mr Chishimba prior to his election as general secretary was deputy to Mr Munyenyembe.
By press time, elections for other positions were still in the process.
Speaking shortly after his election, Mr Munyenyembe pledged total commitment and hard work in helping improve the welfare of the general MUZ membership and miners as a whole.
He said his team would commit itself towards addressing issues such as poor working condition and salaries affecting miners in the country.
He advised the new Government against neglecting the plight of miners because that would make them unpopular among the people who ushered them into power.
“My appeal to the new Government is that they listen to miners and not to be like the past MMD government which failed to listen to the concerns of the people who voted them into power,” he said.
Mr Munyenyembe said among other things his executive would be looking forward to from the new Government was the issue of tax and in particular windfall tax.
Earlier, past acting president Charles Mukuka who also appealed to Government to consider re-instating the windfall tax as a way of broadening the tax base urged the new political leaders to frequently dialogue with key stakeholders as the country seeks to attain sustainable economic development.

Mr. Munyenyembe, it seems everyone supports your election to this position. Congratulations to you! But you seem to be blowing hot and cold – you don’t sound like you’re on the same side of the coin in these two articles(see other article in which you’re reported to be “protecting” Chinese investors). What you say when you assume office sets the agenda of your term of office, yama!
