A FORMER employee of Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) yesterday narrated how he was fired after he questioned management over a K2.1 billion irregularity in the books of accounts.
Making his submission before the Mwila Lumbwe commission of inquiry, George Mushota, 51, alleged that in December 2004, while working for ZNBS as a senior internal auditor, he came across a K2.1 billion outstanding in the books of accounts as un-reconciled mortgage balances.
“These were mortgage balances paid out to members of the public as loans but not recorded in the cash book or general ledger.
“This caused a difference of K2.1 billion between the reconciled completed listings of mortgage balances and the general ledger control balance that existed on ZNBS accounting system as at March 31, 2004,” he said.
Mr Mushota said the difference arose from the fact that there were some loans paid out to members of the public but were not reordered in the society general ledger.
He said on March 31, 2005 when the ZNBS financial year accounts were prepared, the figure had accumulated to K2.2 billion, and that it was highlighted outside the normal accounting figures as unaccounted-for balances.
Mr Mushota said he felt duty-bound, as an internal auditor, to take the matter to the attention of ZNBS through the finance department.
He said when he inquired why the amount was not being accounted for, there was no explanation given by anyone.
He said as a result of the audit query, management became uncomfortable with his presence in the institution and immediately demoted him from the position of senior internal auditor to the position of assistant management accountant.
“During the time I was working in accounts department as assistant management accountant, ZNBS management clearly employed victimisation and oppressive devices against me such that it became very open for everyone else to see that management did not want me anymore,” he said.
Barely a year after his demotion, management again decided to demote him to the position of property and estates officer – administration to be based in Ndola.
Mr Mushota said the main job description of the new position was to supervise staff responsible for cleaning lavatories.
He said he was dismissed from employment on December 28, 2006 after being charged with what he termed artificial offences of gross misconduct, dishonest and falsification conspiracy in a fraudulent activity.
Mr Mushota said he lost the matter in the Industrial Relations Court in Lusaka in 2007.

This are very serious violation of workers rights. Mr Mushota’s dismissal needs to be revisited and he was unfairly fired, ZNBS has no choice but to reinstate him and receive full salary for the months he has stayed without employment. The previous management at ZNBS was so backwards as thought there were not educated. SHAME ON YOU

This Mushota is a crook and I wonder as to why he is saying it today as an auditor when he should have done so a long time ago. You just failed to perform hence you were fired

@Mwembwamwe, you have never tasted ill-treatment that is why you can speak like that. Some of us have witnessed and experienced it firsthand. You are even accused of something completely out of your league (like witchcraft, or wife-grabbing a peasant’s woman) just to sort you out. That is how your government from KK’s time has been operating. Most of the tactics are die-hard one-party strategies that have refused to die. Be careful, you will soon become IMBWA when you start experiencing this mess…

i worked with Mr. mushota some years back before i left ZNBS for a much better employment because of the same frustrating characters called management at ZNBS. I personally know who Mr. Mushota is the only sin he committed is to let management know of their inefficiency. How can they fail to account for K2.1 billion and yet you fire someone who brought that to your attention? i have difficulties in trying to make sense out of this nonsense unless there’s something fishy about what Mr. Mushota

Ok, this guy says K2.1 Billion and Yesterday K2.1 Billion was dug up yesterday…..doesn’t this add up? seeing that the person found in possession of this K2.1 Billion was then Labour Minister?

@ Pabwato read and understand Mushota said the amount was K2.1 in 2005 and accumulated to K2.2 the year that followed (in 2005), don’t just rush to comment.
@ Liseli and Mwembwamwe you are serious dunderheads. The man (Mr Mushota) said he reported to management and later lost the case in the industrial reations court. So what else could he have done because common sense has it that the rate at which things were going, he had no ngwee to afford alternative legal representation. Silence is golden, try to remember that next time.

@ Pabwato I meant to say K2.1 in 2004 and K2.2 in 2005.

I wonder how people follow issues, the guy clearly questioned management why the 2.2billion is not being reconciled and management frustrated him and eventually fired him. He took the matter to the IRC but lost it there….so stop asking why he didnt report the matter when it went as far as IRC…comeon

People do not be excited by one sided stories. You have just heard Mushota’s story. There is more to why he was fired. He is not clean either. Let those interested in this case investigate how Mushota used company money for his immoral activities. But abantu babufi. Yes MMD could have been bad in some areas but what has that got to do with personal irresponsibility? Ask Mushota how he lost his house in Villa?
