‘CASH CROPS’ grower, Austin Liato a former Zambia’s labour minister in the previous embattled MMD government has been detained by police at Lusaka’s Woodlands police station.
Police service spokesperson, Elizabeth Kanjela, confirmed that Mr. Liato is yet to be charged. Ms. Kanjela further disclosed that investigations are still going on .
Lawyers representing Mr. Liato have declined to comment on the matter, saying it is too early.
Mr. Liato was detained Tueday 11/29 evening at exactly 20:00 hrs, after a conducted search by law enforcement agencies at his Kalundu residence for close to three hours.
Earlier, Mr. Liato appeared before law enforcement officers at the defunct Task force on Corruption offices in Lusaka’s Woodlands residential area in connection with K2.1 billion which was buried at his Lusaka West farm.

Politicians are proving to be heartless creatures and this is just a tip of the iceberg.Imagine the Hospitals that have no drugs, Ex-Zambia Airways Employees that have not been payed for the past 17 years, Dilapidated school, college and University infrastructure and the list goes on. Are we to trust all the power hungry politicians hunting for jobs in politics?
This for sure is a time Bomb and all those involved should know that Zambian people will one day rise to claim their wealth back. This is what our politicians are asking for and they shall surely receive it. May God help all the suffering Zambians.

I hope this ends the way most of us want it to end… i say this because some of our laws are a bit porous… for example, the Bank of Zambia Act does not expressly prohibit one from HOARDING money- therefore, if Liato finds a good lawyer who’s very academic, he might just find a way around this situation… I pray that they nail this man. Let him explain where he got this money when in actual fact, he told us there was no money in this country. let him be an example to deter any would-be offenders.

According to the BOZ statistics(i desearve to be corrected if wrong) only about K18billion circulates around on a dairy basis.this includes the money we exchange with essential commodies for oursurvival..now do we realise the impact of mr liato’s actions .that money was suppose to be in the bank or invested so as to accrue interest.because one kwacha in the hand is worht 2 kwacha 2moro.i feel if that money was dubiously acquired liaoto should pay interest as at todays interest rate as if that money was in circulation it may have had an effect on the price of essential goods and services..thts why money is difficult find in zambia coz alot of pipo are growing money in their backyard.m disappointed because i thot liato is mo wise to have sunk so low.

Man accidentally gives away life savings hidden away in donated suit
There’s a cynical old saying that “no good deed goes unpunished.” That adage has proved true for an elderly Illinois man who accidentally gave away his entire life savings when making a clothing donation to his local Goodwill.
The 80-year-old man, who didn’t trust banks, had kept his life savings of $13,000 sewn inside the lining of one of his suits. He is currently appealing for the money’s return so that he can care for his wife, who has Stage 4 cancer.
Goodwill spokeswoman Dana Engelbert said the charity has searched the Moline store where the man made his donation but could not find the suit in question. “We’re sorting through the donations that came in at the time,” Engelbert explained. Goodwill employees are also searching through bins of donated clothes transported from the Moline facility to a regional warehouse in Iowa City.
“We’re hoping it’s still there and we can find it for them,” Engelbert said, “It’s their life savings. It’s important.”
The man’s daughter, who says he is remaining anonymous because he is “devastated and embarrassed” by the story, is offering a $1,000 reward for the suit’s new owner to return the cash

These thieves have costed many innocent souls death since the money which was supposed to be used for medication was buried by ****** fool Liato. He MUST be JAILED for life no mercy. Please I appeal to the Government to IMMEDIATELY change the Zambian currency because Liato is not the only one who earthed such a huge amount of money am pretty sure even other former Ministers ofcourse not excluding RB himself have buried money as well. Let it rot underground. If there are other people with knowledge of this kind of action let them review without fear you are protected no one will intimidate you

It is sad that zambians can be so heartless that one can bury money,is liato telling us that he has got no relatives that are suffering that he should bury money, mwe bantu bakwa lesa instead of fighting for workers rights as a former labour leader he was busy burying money,as if what chiluba did was not enough,we should have another former labour leader involved in such a criminal activity, you are an embarrasment to the entire labour movement.am now left to wonder whether it would be safe to entrust power in the hands of any labour leader anymore, may you find it within your heart to apologise to the zambian workers who have died without getting their benefits because the person that was supposed to ensure that they are paid was busy digging trenches to bury his loot.may God deliver you

I can imagine him looking at the unpainted walls, the lousy smell and the dirty loos in the cells and wondering why they are in such a bad state.
I hope he will have the sense to realise that, part of the K2.1 B would have made his stay in the cells a little bit comfortable, had it remained in GRZ coffers.

Hey guys. No need to get worked up over Liato. The man has earned his money from ZESCO, Private businesses and Ministry of Labour and Social Security. If the POLICE cannot come up with anything tangible in 48 hours, he has to be released. There are many people keeping forex and the zambian kwacha at home but its clean money. i mean, 20th september was highly unpredicatable and you are better off securing your money. The calibre of our police, acc and dec cannot “prove beyond any reasonable doubt that LIATO STOLE”. Mind u, the burden of proof lies with the STATE AND NOT THE ACCUSED. WATCH THIS SPACE

When I got better and was finally able to talk and recognise people, I then heard there was a team of policement looking for me. Here I am, and by the way have you found out who put the money at my farm, coz it means am not safe there?”
