this makes sad reading but government had put up that bridge to avoid such fatal incidences. all students or other pedestrians wishing to get to UNZA campuss should use the bridge lest they risk their lives. punishing the driver is one thing but a life cannot be brought back. let all concerned people use the bridge at the crossing site.

the university has a lot of land to build more hostels. surely it is high time the senate/council or university administration looked into expanding the campus in this age where our country’s population has more than trebled since the university was built. MHSRIP.

I sympathise with her demise. The GER has claimed many lives on that stretch. Why don’t all pedestrians use the bridge constructed to prevent such accidents? Are we going to continue blaming the government? Why link the construction of hostels at UNZA GER Campus with accidents on that road? We should tackle the government over issues like road user legislation, education and upgrading of road infrastructure to accommodate different types of road users. It seems to me that some pedestrians are in the habit of competing with vehicles for road space. If you end up dead, how can you win?

It’s unfortunate, tragic, a needlessly wasted life, MYHSRIP. That streach of the road shud be subject to a law whereby it is illegal for pedestrians to walk across and permanent speed traps shud be placed at that location.

it is a sad reading indeed,i remember not too long ago when i was at UNZA,radical students lead by SEBA and the Union of Antonio Mwanza had a series of demonstrations to pressure government to build a bridge after the contnous bashing of students.SEBA were ever you are you did well, otherwise accidents reduced. However, there is now need to construct more hostels at campus so that all the students can be accommodated at campus.MHSRIP and may God comfort the family.

That makes sad reading. Am surprised students are still being bashed at that section of the road. But it baffles me, how come mental patients at Chainama and school boys and girls are much careful when crossing the GER unlike ba mature pa Unza?

It is also a lesson to GRZ and City fathers that in this age, u cannot have highways running thru compounds and residential areas without some barricades etc to protect pedestrians and pipo driving form homes to town etc. Highways must be separated from urban roads. U can’t have a man from an argument with his wife at home joining a highway at his own urban speed! That’s what causes accidents.

mwansa xb, I salute you. Your thoughts are with me. Some idiots think a bridge can be substituted for hostels. Where there is a population growth and an increased demand for learning, the campus infrasture should be expanded including building of new hostels. Why should students cross the Gt East road to lodge in kalundu for their study?

A great loss indeed to her family, the nation too. Now for those who are wondering why she did not use the footbridge, we have not been told exactly the spot where the accident happened, the foot bridge does not cover the whole of that Kalundu area or does it? My appeal to all road users (pedestrians and drivers) let us be very careful and take time to apply the look right, look left and look right again (for the pedestrians). for the drivers, do you ever realise that driving at excessive speeds in areas where they are pedestrians can cause loss of lives or damage to property, so why not reign in your speed so that you do not take a life? its simple, we need to accommodate each other in the way we walk, we drive. Too bad someone had to die albeit untimely.

  35. HENRY KAPATA & TEAM, FIX THE OPENING IN THE BARRIER

    December 7, 2011 at 9:38 am

I don’t know HOW MANY TIMES I’ve said that the HUGE, WIDE OPENING in the barrier in the middle of Great East Road between Unza and Kalundu – caused by a huge truck that crashed into it MANY MONTHS AGO – must be closed up AS A MATTER OF URGENCY. I’ve asked, countless times, if the authorities should WAIT TILL A LIFE IS NEEDLESSLY LOST. Sadly, it has happened. Now, are Henry Kapata & his sleepy, uncaring, PATHETICALLY LAZY Lusaka City Council, RTSA, and whoever else is SUPPOSED TO BE RESPONSIBLE happy? Kapata seems to love always appearing on TV bragging about how many street vendors he has arrested (innocent people trying to earn an honest living for their families instead of stealing), but he DOESN’T SEEM TO CARE ONE BIT ABOUT THINGS THAT REALLY MATTER. Henry Kapata & your hopeless team, RTSA, etc., the blood of that innocent young lady is ON YOUR HEADS!!!!

shame to the people who are blaming the deceased that she could have used the bridge.its only that one will never and i repeat never know when they will met their fate, death comes unexpectedly, if you have nothing to say just reserve your comments. some people have died just after drinking water. so be careful on the comments you make when death strikes next time it will be you.MHSRIP

Let us not blame the deceased or anybody over the death. Ni nthawi yakwana. Even if the government built more hostels, this does not mean students will be confined within the campus. They will still move out. Each one of us will go; for none of us will live up to the end of world.

I was there at UNZA. Exam time is very difficult time as other students like gunning(reading at the last minute). At times you are in a state of confusion to even hear a vehicle approaching. I agree that more hostels should be built to accomodate more students. I remember fighting for that bridge also because of such ugly sites. Rest in peace Matusa

People are not “blaming” the dead girl for not using the foot bridge, they are simply stating a fact: USE THE BRIDGE!!! Full Stop! Its a warning and lesson to the living, for the dead know nothing… I love the one who said there is no shortcut to doing what is right. HRSRIP, condolences to the family. I know how it feels to lose someone when that death could have been prevented, its so painful. That’s why people feel so frustrated and ask, WHY???????
