NASA Discovers ALIEN Planet In ‘Habitable Zone’
NASA has taken a giant leap closer to discovering whether we're alone in the universe by confirming the existence of the first planet, named Kepler-22b, that exists in the "habitable zone" of its star.
The reason Kepler-22b is particularly notable is that it orbits in the middle of the so-called “habitable zone” of its star, which NASA calls “sun-like,” but is slightly smaller and cooler than our sun. (Earth orbits in a similar location to our sun.) Two other planets have been found in the habitable zones of their stars, but they orbit on the outer edges of what could be classified as habitable.
“This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth’s twin,” said Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist. “Kepler’s results continue to demonstrate the importance of NASA’s science missions, which aim to answer some of the biggest questions about our place in the universe.”
Kepler-22b measures roughly 2.4 times the radius of Earth, and is located approximately 600 light-years away. It’s year — the amount of time it takes a planet to orbit its sun — is nearly the same as Earth’s, taking 290 Earth-days to make a full orbit. The planet, along with 48 other planets that may also lie in a habitable zone, was discovered using a number of ground-based telescopes, which monitor the Cygnus and Lyra constellations, which are home to more than 150,000 stars.
To confirm that a heavenly body is, in fact, a planet, Kepler scientists watch to see if a planet candidate crosses in front of a particular star, something known as “transit.” In order for a planet candidate to be confirmed as a planet, it must transit a minimum of three times. It was through this scrutiny that Kepler-22b achieve full planet status.
Now that Kepler-22b has been confirmed, Kepler scientist will begin to examine it more closely to find out what it is made of (solid, liquid or gas), and whether or not it has an atmosphere that could actually support life as we know it.

@ d banks its not in our solar system of nine planets. This is another constellation but within our galaxy the milkyway. 600 light years is quite tremendous distance, but there are theories that suggest time travel e.g shortcuts through wormholes in string theory, information carrying particles like the neutrinos( that can travel faster than speed of light)if nurtured can maybe one day copy all our genetic al info and reassemble them in far away planets!

1. the Mission is called “The Kepler Mission” named after the famous Astronomer/Mathematician Johannes Kepler…
2. Kepler 22b orbits a star (regularly) and that has been proved since the first readings were taken in 2009. You must understand that a lot we know about the university is based on decades of observation of light and radio patterns originating from distant celestial bodies…
3. Those of you that are refuting this discovery…what’s wrong with another planet with conditions favorable to human existence? Afterall, microscopic organisms have been discovered on bodies like Mars and in some cases on hot-ass planets like venus…a clear implication of the possibility of an evolution.

Wishful thinking. Do you guys have any idea what 600 light years is? That planet might not even exist today. That is the truth about astronomy. We are getting information that is 600years old (the time it took for light to reach us). Meaning even our great grand children ten generations down the line have no chance of ever making it to that star system. Nasa are very good at wasting money. Why pay people to look for other earth like planets when we will never even set foot there? Meanwhile people in Somalia and Niger are dying of starvation. God help us.

It is fun reading comments about the article cited here. Some convey facts and others are just never mind. Well, if you would ask me, I would fear my existence of another earth. Why? it only means that there is something terrible that might occur years from now to our mother earth that would cause millions of death.

I don’t think the word worlds as in your Koran and Bible means the same as what scientists have just discovered. If God wanted to refer to this discovery he would. have said it precisely as: other galaxies or planets. Worlds in your scriptures for me just means other nations on planet earth. One other thing You moslems portray God as infinitely powerful, why then would such a mighty being rely on common mortals like you and me to declare a jihad or fatwah for his teachings to spread? Why would he want to enjoy the spilling of blood by his disciples for his glory? Those of you saying man will reach this same planet please tell me how? Space is too vast, even voyager1 the first satellite to be launched with a map of the solar system only reached the edge of the of the solar system recently after it was launched in 1977. This craft travels at 15km/s (54,000km/h.)It takes about 20 hours to get a radio signal from this craft and the distance is increasing. This isn’t even a light year away. Don’t be fooled, human beings will never leave the solar system. It is possible but not probable. For one, the human body was not designed for space travel-but that is another lesson in biology altogether. We have more problems on earth than looking at stars. This nonsense needs to stop!

1 light year = 9.8tillion Kms and this means that for 600light years is 5880 tillion kms. this is how far Keplar 22b is from us. they use light years coz it becomes difficult to use kms and mind u a light year is the distance light travels to rich us and our very own sun’s light takes 8minutes to reach us but these evenly bodies tek trillions of kms.our nearest star is 4.5light years and multiply that by 9.8tillion kms and u will know how far these stars are. by the way there are other galaxies which are billions of light years away and this keplar 22b is in our own galaxy coz our galaxy is about 100000light years in diameter. but try to think of a black hole

Momin you havent answered Anne Billiva’s questions. Moreover there are no parallels between the big bang theory and “the heaven and earth were one”.
“Created everything out of water” doesn’t refer to life. It obviously refers to everything; rocks, planets, soil, fire, life, etc. Did all these things come out of water? What Scientific theory states so?
It is We who made the universe en we constantly expand it-What do you mean by this? Of course we know the universe expands but how do we we cause it to expand?
The bit about the English language is gibberish. Whatever language the Koran was written in would have found an appropriate word to describe planet or galaxy.
