President, Sata has invited the Russian government to send a business delegation to Zambia to explore
various areas of investment in the country.
President Sata said this during a meeting held at State House on Friday last week when he met Mr. Mikhail Margelov, a Special
representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Cooperation with African Countries.
Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations, George Chellah disclosed this in a media statement.
Mr. Sata said during the meeting that he recognized the important role Russia played in the freedom struggle for African nationalism.
He attributed the apparent quiet period in relations between Russia and African countries in the post Soviet-era to that country’s need to attend to its own socialchallenges.
He also noted that at independence, Zambia had less than 100 university graduates saying this number soon increased through the many scholarships offered by Russia, which was then known as the USSR.
President Sata identified agriculture, mining, civil engineering, oil
exploration and tourism as critical areas where the two countries could cooperate.
And in response, the Russian President’s Special Envoy, Mr. Margelov, said Russia wants to pursue pragmatic rather than ideological relations with African countries.

I welcome this motion. Icipondo, church, state and business should never be mixed. Honestly, if an organisation that promotes the rights of homosexuals wants to invest in Zambia, I wouldn’t be against it. Narrow mindedness is the scourge of Zambia.

It’s funny how Zedians are easily duped by the so-called “investors”!!! We look at them with awe, especially if they’ve a white skin!!
Here is how it works:these people (Chinese,South Africans,Brits etc) come to sell “finished” products rather than set up manufacturing plants, agribusinesses, R&D labs etc!
Some examples:
1)CHINESE engineers employ some Zambians miners to dig the copper;use CHINESE transport companies to take the raw mineral to China where it’s processed only to be re-exported around the world (including Zed)!
NET RESULT:the Chinese take 90% of the benefits coz they gain from the “added value” of transporting, processing and exporting the “finished product”.
2)SOUTH AFRICANS open shopping malls in Lsk and the gullible herald that as “development” not realising that 70-80% of the shops and merchandise (clothes, electrical equipment etc) will be SOUTH AFRICAN!
NET RESULT:the SOUTH AFRICANS export their products, in doing so, they use SOUTH AFRICAN hauliers, manufacturing remains in RSA (where most employees are SOUTH AFRICANS)!! Yes few thousands of Zambians work in the retail shops but once again RSA is the biggest beneficiary!!
3)NIGERIANS/BRITS/INDIANS…open a bank branch on Cairo Rd,and once again the impressionable herald it as the “benefits” of capitalism! Little do they realise that those FOREIGN banks will take their profits to NIGERIAN/BRITISH shareholders!! Put it this way,no Zambian owns a single share in Barclays, EcoBank, FinaBank etc!!
I could go on and on but hope some of you get the picture! The bottom line is profits go abroad while Zambia sees no new manufacturing plants or agribusinesses to challenge Zambeef.
As for the Russians, their economy is identical to that of Zed,they rely solely on natural resources, chiefly petrol and gas! Other than they’ve no industry to speak of, even the Smirnoff they’re famous for is distilled by the British drinks giant Diageo

OK, Icipondo, if I’ve missed the point, then explain what point I’ve missed. I’ve gathered from your comment that you’re suggesting you prefer Russian investment over Western investment because Western values infringe on the values of the so called “Christian Nation” we call Zambia. Am I wrong? FYI, have you seen any recent Russian news stories? That’s why I’m saying you should never mix church, state and business. Three completely different things yet you letting your opinions on one institution guide your decisions on another.

Very welcoming development. The Russians are well advanced technologically and are brilliant in various fields. There’s need to embrace them and many other foreign investors to help us achieve economic growth. It is very acheivable with foreign investment for as long as all necessary laws are followed.

One good about the Russians is that they are unlikely to tell us how to treat Homos. One bad thing is that, they are so racist back home that a lot of African students get killed for being in Russia.

Russia is struggling economically, they flock to neighbouring countries such as Norway to look for donkey work. What kind of investment do we expect from them????

Regarding quality of investments:
1. For as long as GRZ does not demand value addtion and transfer of technology, you will be blaming investors of all sorts.
2. For as long as GRZ R&D expenditure is nil, don’t expect Zed to progress beyond what investors u get today.
3. If you don’t do much for yourself, don’t blame foreigners for filling in the gaps. FYI, life does not allow for vacuums to exist. Eg. Finance is Zambians bank. It took fellow Zambians to destroy it. Simoson had an idea of a “Zambian shop mall” but he ended with one of the shittiest buildins in town. Caruosel was better but MMD caders put up utuntemba. LCC with the Lebanese and the Chinese went and turned town town center and Kamwala prime areas into crap shopping centers.
So why would you want to RSA for giving you an escalator u haven’t seen in a long time? Why blame Nigerians for putting up banks?
So lift your ass from where it is, grumbling and take part in the economy. No one has stopped you.
When u have money you bury it or spend it on Sandra in Ngombe township. Please!!!!!!!
Duh!

I think the russians r right. Pragmatism is the way in africa. If we just sit back & study theories that worked way back we’ll still b behind. Sometimes we need to act & create our own theories which may work in african development
hahahahah

i think only pipo that don’t know Russians can say crap abt them…i was a student in Russia…there economy is one of the best in the world,,,can u image an environment where u cant point out who is poor or who is rich….ya things there are expensive but if u were a russian workin….there is alot of money in there country….Russia is the only country in the world that can stand alone…without help from others…dont listen to the western media who just talk…move around the world and see 4 yo self
hahahahah
December 12, 2011 at 12:44 pm
And another thing….when i was in Russia there 2 types of Russians the ones with white hair and the ones with black hair, the ones with white hair are very good they always wanted to interact with blacks but the ones with black hair…are the ones u hear of been ricst…once they get drunk they start acting wired… that’s the thing abt Russian pipo…the biggest threat to america is Russia….coz its the only country america cant fight
