By Grandson Shipangula
I have always understood Christmas day as being a day when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Taking a night tour to see how some sectors of society were celebrating this special day, left me wondering whether what was being celebrated was the birth of Christ or something else.
I managed to touch a number of places in Lusaka’s Chilenje and Kabwata. Places like Klub Vegas, Lazymens, Break point, East point, Mikes pub, The Ultimate Joint, and Kabwata Market near Lumbani supermarket, to mention only a few, and the impression I got was uniform.
What I saw left me wondering whether Zambia is truly a Christian Nation or its just a saying. If we are what we claim we are, then there is need to clean up the dirt. The minds of some people, old and young, male and female are so dirty. I am at pains to accept whether some parents really love their children because a parent cannot allow a 12 year old kid to leave home in the night to go and get drunk at Lazymens.
Time and again I have been asking myself whether consuming alcohol is the only and best way to celebrate because of the excessive/abnormal consumption of alcohol that was in yester night’s celebrations. Two ladies got drunk as early as 21:13 hrs to an extent of being taken by Taxi drivers they did not even know, simply because they were defenseless. What they did with them where they went, only God Knows.
As if that was not enough, the bar owners bars had no regulations on who was eligible to buy alcohol from them because I could see youngstars holding packs of shake shake and bottles of alcohol yet everyone was cool with it. This was rather very disturbing to find that kids as young as 14 years, simply below 18 years were amongst those that were patronizing drinking places.
The celebrations were also characterized with sexual activities. It was actually a peak night for the commercial sex workers that even a 15 year old boy was able to buy a sexual intercourse from prostitutes as old as 27-30 years old for only K20,000. This was more serious behind Breakpoint in the unfinished building which was being used as a free brothel and across the road behind BP service station.
Here there was no age limits, both the old and young, male and female were in the illicit sexual activities in public.
I saw this happen with my eyes. Young girls as young as 14 years had turned themselves into commercial sex workers. Young boys were also busy trying to experiment but ofcourse under the influence of alcohol.
My Driver Mr. Issac Mwanza deliberately inquired for a service from one of the mature prostitutes so that we could get more details on what was going on and this was her response;
“Bwino shani? Meaning, Am fine how are you? Lelo tulepela fye short time, na kondomu ni 50pin, Live ni 150. Meaning that today we are only offering short time services. With a condom its K50,000 and without its K150,000.”
He then asked for a discount and this was what she said,” Live awe tetimfumyeko, but na protection kutimwampela fye 20pin.” I can not discount, if its Live sex but with a condom you can just give me a K20,000.
These things really do happen… Really, what I saw and heard yesternight, has kept me thinking. People including young ones where busy buying and who knows maybe some had it live. Most clients were the Xsays, Whats up vocabulary boys and obviously married rich men.
Lastly I am disappointed that a person would buy a nice vehicle and turn it into a brothel. Most of the vehicles that were packed on these premises had people in them busy having sex. This act seemed normal because almost everyone was doing it or was thinking of doing the same.
My biggest worry is that we have exposed our young generation to this sort of behavior. The underage patronizing and auctioning of sex by prostitutes. These are the people we believe to be our future leaders but they are the ones being exposed to such illicit behavior, how then do we expect to develop Zambia with such a crop of leaders? Zambia can never develop unless the moral attitudes and behaviors of especially the youth changes for the better.
The fight against HIV/AIDS is also in vein if this is to continue…. Because a huge number is at risk of contracting the virus if things remain unchanged.

@?????????????? You don’t have to be a Christian to have morals. Our ancestors who existed even before Christianity was inposed had balances and checks in their culture. There is nothing we as a Bantu have benefited from Christianity.

Yes your observation are correct but they fall short of practical analytical thinking,Why is there too much drunkenness and sexual activities in the Country? It is a sign of deeper problems in the Country. The writer of the article must be angry at the way elected leaders have raped and abused people’s trust by enriching themselves not caring when a Country has a broken down medical system, educational system and an old electric grid which is headed to collapsing because it has out lived it’s lifespan. It looks like the long the people live in this state they no longer see a broken down system.

ALOT OF INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT THIS ARTICLE:
1. The writer is Grandson Shipangula; How can a GRANDSON see so much?
2. Grandson does’nt want the readers of his article to associate him with the women of the night, so he uses his driver to “shop” for sex. Now, can fellow bloggers with legal minds advise if we can charge this guy with ABUSE OF DRIVER?
3. “I saw this happen with my eyes”, WHOSE EYES WOULD HE RATHER HAVE USED?
4. THERE’S NOTHING CHRISTMAS ABOUT THESE OBSERVATIONS: Immorality is the order of the day and just too rife in our society each of the 365 days of the year. This guy did not even have to go and peep into each one of the cars parked at those bars to blame it on Christmas day – just a few weeks ago, Chibamba Kanyama decried this same type of behaviour at a function that took place in the Mulungushi International Conference Centre. So, this article underscores the enormity of this problem by suggesting that whatever he saw was a way of celebrating Christmas. By now, Grandson’s worries could be gone with Christmas while some of us fear for what happens in those places of “entertainment” ON A DAILY BASIS, and the impact that this has on our country. Of course my GRANDSON is justified to worry about the future of this country because SEX appears to be the theme of whatever people find appealing these days; if a dress, skirt or shoe does’nt make a gril or lady look “SEXY” then none buys it. Even cars are said to look SEXY these days, so just imagine the scale of such sentiments among revellers that are DRUNK, IT’S CATASTROPHIC to say the least!!

It is pertinent to let most parents know about the levels of immorality going on amongst their children because some of the incidences mentioned in tha article leave much to be desired.Bt the simple question i have for the author is….How many have access to the Internet to read such stories?…do u think other media houses have no data whatsoever about the rate of alcohol abuse and sexual scandals happening around our communities? give us news my friend nt pornographic stories…..who knows maybe u also tested coz u never finishd the story wit yo driver concerning yo sexual negotiations…..u dnt have to be a thief for u to know how they steal….We are just tarnishing the image of our country….this is Internet my friend and the whole world is able to access such ridiculous and defamatory info about zambia…give us news and nt rubbish

some1 doesn’t see the poin of this Article??? U don’t see anything wrong when people are busy bonking each other instead of celebrating the birth of a perfect being?? Do u expect people to shup up just because these things are happening every day?? Oh My God!! I do no believe the moral decay in this country… We are supposed to be a Christian Nation for crying out loud, mwe fi bantu imwe….. Christians shouldn’t condone such.. If ur parents allowed u to drink and have sex at the age of 12 then don’t come here and corrupt other people’s morals… U should be thanking the author of this Article for bringing such these to light but it’s shameful that some of u can’t see the relevance of this story.. It’s a shame… really, it is!!!

It pains to see what is coming of the young generation! To them celebrations means alcohol with borrowed money!Parents are so busy with one wanders what! They don’t bother to know where the children are! We can’t leave all this to Gov’t as if it gave birth to humans NO!! People must be responsible! Look at the way some parents allow their children dress up? God help this nation! If possible let Gov’t bar drinking some time!

The author of this article should not be crying foul over the moral decay of our society at Christmas. What is Christma by the way? True Christians do not even celebrate it. IT HAS NO BIBLICAL BASIS WHATSOVER!!! What you are seeing is just THE LAST DAYS!!! So you have a choice to make between Jesus Christ or Satan? I CHOOSE JESUS CHRIST!

The fact is Chrismas is not a devine appointment day for Christians(Without Biblical basis). It was simply adopted by some religious groups relating it to the ancestral worship of the goddess the Sun.So dont link it to the true christianity,it is paganism, period!

I am a christian too, but do I really expect people to stop doing what they are doing because it is christmas…noooo. I know it is sad and other christians are busy sitting here upset about it, but sin is sin regardless of the date and time. Some people go to church on christmas and some go to break point and just because a president called Zambia a christian nation doesn’t mean people were going to flood the churches and repent.
We Christians are quick to judge, but rather than be sitting in the sidelines and condemning how about doing something. Call the police or talk to your politicians to ask for bars to enforce the legal drinking age, which will be hard in any case because Zambia does not enforce an ID policy.
Also try to join volunteer groups that are fighting everyday to keep young girls form prostitution. Notti oh someone is boinking hookers on Christmas, well they will be doing it on fathers day, independence, Easter and whenever. My jaw is still on the ground from reading this article. Quite sad, nomba my question is why was this dude at all these places on Christmas day and making his driver work that late on a holiday??

The clause “Zambia is a christian nation” is widely misused. Mr Author, i have come to inderstand that when Dr. Chiluba pronounced that statement, he meant the country would be governed on Christian principles. I believe thats why things like prostitution, theft, and homosexuality (just to name a few) are illegal. He did not mean that every individual in Zambia is a christian. If that where the case, all these mosques and buddhist temples wouldn’t be there. A few valid things have been said…but i feel this nation, and the world at large need Jesus. We need a saviour who will rescue us from our condemnation and bring us unto salvation. We love darkness so much, thats why our deeds are evil. Thats why all this alcoholism and prostitution and what not are manifesting. Come to Jesus, all who are heavy laden, and he will give you rest. Confess that you are a sinner, incapable of saving yourself, repent of your sin and accept the Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. He has already paid the price…come to Jesus now!
