LIBYA’s Lap Green READY To Fight ‘To The Bone’ Over Ownership Of ZAMTEL “ZAMTEL Belongs To The People Of LIBYA”

LAP Green, the Libyan owned telecommunications network, says it is deeply concerned about unsubstantiated news reports that the Zambian Government is moving to seize the 75% stake in ZAMTEL held by LAP Green.
LAP GreeN bought its stake in ZAMTEL in June 2010 for about 1.37 trillion Kwacha following A bid process that was overseen by the Zambian Development Agency.
Newly appointed Chairman of LAP GreeN, Wafik Alshater says he only hopes the reports are not true stating that the situation will not only damage the telecoms industry in Zambia but will also send a wrong signal to those looking forward to investing in the country.
In a statement, Mr. Alshater says Lap GreeN will pursue all options and do everything possible to retain our stake in ZAMTEL, which he says is a highly prestigious part of its pan-African network.
He said ZAMTEL belongs to the people of Libya and will do everything to retain its stake.
Mr. Alshater says ZAMTEL is now a Zambian success story stating that since LAP Green’s acquisition, the telecommunications company has attracted over 400,000 new customers and grown its market share from 3% to 11%.
He says Lap Green has committed itself to investing US $129 million (ZK670 billion) in ZAMTEL over two years so as to create a truly competitive and world class telecommunications company.
Mr. Alshater says LAP Green looks forward to continuing to develop ZAMTEL into a leading telecoms company, working with its partner in this investment, the Zambian Government.
Well Placed Sources recently briefed Tumfweko and this website exclusively revealed that government has reversed the sale of ZAMTEL from Lap Green following a cabinet meeting which was held on Wednesday last week.

ok fine ZAMTEL was fraudulently sold and i fully support the government effort in trying to reverse the rot..
But wait a minute..what will happen next..Is government going to commit itself to re-capitalize ZAMTEL and run it efficiently without due abuse and mismanagement..
KK tried with good intentions to nationalise but look what happened..Nepotism and incompetent moved in..RESULT:Mansions you see in New Kasama, Makeni, Barlastone park, Lusaka West etc..
LESSON: Business is best run by private individuals in different forms like individuals per say, cooperatives etc
SO: Whatever the PF government does, please do not EVEN DREAM OF TAKING US BACK TO NATIONALISATION.
WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES: Encourage and buils capacity in ZAMBIANS to run businesses…
HOW: Well you are in GOVERNMENT so think through it..THATS WHY WE PAY YOU…

The problem of Zambians is that we don’t know how war begins and don’t know what it is to be a refugee. First we have lost our own cultural values, I would rather say that Zambia belongs to the LOZI, TONGA, BEMBA, NYANJA PEOPLE and all other zambian tribes. now here pretending to be friendly over money, one day will pay deadly, check LIBYA and Islam are killing black citizens, Your ignorance you supporting ZAMBIA DEALING WITH LIBYA will pay. our soldiers only know how to crop elephants thats all.

DEAD LEADERS, DEAD CITIZENS, DEAD ZAMBIA.

by the way, that black color on our national flag represents “BLINDNESS OF ITS CITIZEN” the devil knows….

Tumfweko and Zwd what do you gain by exegerations. Anyone supporting this Arab threatening us is a fool ,suffering from inferiority complex. If realy it was sold corruptly it must be reserved right away. It makes me irritated for ****** Zambians who want to be taken advantage of by any fool. What do you gain by so doing? YOU WANT EVERYBODY TO SHEET ON YOU. You see what corruption can bring? Dora ,chitongo and chi Ruphia must be dealt with. Mwe fima judge be serious and let these criminals go and die in your filthy jails. The probability of Zamtel of being undervalued is high. What a country of embiciles. You fools laughing your sick lungs out it is not Sata who will suffer its you.

Looks like Sata’s populism of “REVERSING” the Zamtel sale has blinded majority of bloggers; here are some considerations:

    1) that people complain the transaction wasn’t transparent may be a valid point BUT let the financial irregularities and corruption practices of the MMD govt be proven in q court of law first!

    2) a company/service may be worth $X but if NO ONE is willing to pay that amount then the purchase/sale shall be a FRACTION (however small) of X; that is how the basic economic law of “supply & demand” works!
We observe the “supply & demand” principle everyday;despite playing the same music and serving the same alcohol, entrance at nightclubs is more expensive on weekends than during the week due to the former’s higher demand!!it is therefore misleading of PF to claim that Zamtel was “undersold” because it wasn’t purchased at its “book value” of $81 million!!

    3) those of you who under how business transactions are conducted and can filter nationalist sentiments will know that what the Libyan chap is true because Lap Green owns 75% of Zamtel! The IRONY is GRZ will most probably pay the FULL WHACK if/when it buys back the shares because the Libyans increased the book value since Zamtel gained customers and received substantial investments! Besides, under international law (which Zambia is signatory),Lap Green is NOT OBLIGED to sell its shares and/or can sell to whoever they want!

    4) “Zambia for Zambians” maybe a nice slogan but it is suicidal economics!! Those of you chanting that slogan should bear in mind the economic legacy of KK’s nationalisation program! The REALITY is Zambia has virtually NO INDIGENOUS major company; majority of assets in shopping malls, mines, telecoms and banking industries are FOREIGN-OWNED!!
This isn’t unique to Zed,even iconic UK companies like “Land Rover” and many others are in foreign hands!!

While some foreign investors have dubious backgrounds,we shouldn’t ignore that genuine investors bring in much need capital and technology Zambians do NOT have!! It is therefore imperative GRZ encourages economic growth through indigenous entrepreneurs!!

If tumfweko’s source is not exergarating on the response from GreenLap’s “Arab” chairman, fine let him fight to his born as he puts it…………..
But one thing he should realise is;he his not just threatening the Zambian Government, but the people of Zambia at large.
And as the Chairman(himself) of GreenLap he should show some professionalism, meaning as he thinks & talks he should be rational, cause we Zambians won’t take threats!Just as ‘Munalian’ puts it lets wait until court procedings are done lest we may be mistaken for prejudice.
    Farewell,
    Greenlap!

The most important thing to note from this statement from LaPN is”He said ZAMTEL belongs to the people of Libya and will do everything to retain its stake”.Zambians is this what we bargained for. What legacy are we leaving for our children?

I think we should do something as the true owners of this company that is now in the hands of the Libyan people. Lets all stop using zamtel, lets abondon as much of it as we can. devalue it and they just might bow down to the protest, sell and head back home. from what I know of these people, they can be very cheeky, esp when it comes to money and power.

Banda and Siliya are sick. They brought us sick people if what this man is saying is true. They even gave away Zesco’s optic fibre shares!!!! Yangu ee. You who were supporting Rupiah, you see what this guy meant!!! Yangu eee!! Nikalibe kuona. Zamtel should have been sold to the Zambian people. We have enough Zambian who are genuinely rich who could have bought shares in Zamtel, but now, yangu eeee!

But we shall not let this pass. We shall fight tooth and nail and if is it to shed blood we shall do so fo the sake of mother Zambia. We did it for the liberation of southern African and we can still do it now for economical independence.

Long Live Zambia! God bless Zambia. Amen

If we are not careful Zambia will be owned by others…

Look, Airtel, Taj Pamodi, Intercontinental and KCM are for the Indian people, Chambishi Mine and Maamba Collieries are for the people of China, Lumwana Mine by Barrick Gold is for the Canadian people, Zanaco is for the Dutch, Finance Bank was almost for the South African people and International Airport was to be for the Turkish people who also own Horizon School on Kabulonga as Manda Hill, Makeni Mall and Levy Junction are turning to for the South African people.

If we remain as careless we shall only remain with Post Offices, a few Rural Health Centres and dilapidated govt schools!

hmmmm, on this one I fully support the PF govt. Zamtel sale needs to be reversed, unreseverdly, whether expensive/ costly or would frighten would be investors or both.

In my opinion, only an insane Zambian would not support this move. Politics aside, this is a national issue why support the other country?

    January 9, 2012 at 8:55 am

We want Zamtel to be partly privatised maybe up to 51% not more, the rest should be sold on the stock exchange. And the buyer should buy it at the right price. In Dora and RB’s case, they under-valued it deliberately to recieve millions of dolaars in their offshore accounts while you masses the rightful owners wallow in poverty.

    January 9, 2012 at 10:46 am

    @ cn,
If you read my point (1) you’ll notice that I clearly state that the sale may have been fraudulent!

Correct me if I am wrong…”reversing” the Zamtel transaction was one of PF’s electoral promise, now duly elected,PF is serving and expressing the views of citizens.

I understand perfectly well that people are skeptical of MMD due to its corrupt practices and therefore suspect kickbacks and other financial irregularities may have accured during the sale of Zamtel but those sentiments have no impact on the business transaction unless they can proved in a court of law!!

While people’s anger is understandable,”reversing” the transaction is cheap populism unless GRZ buys back shares or re-nationalise the company! Whichever way,the litigation won’t be cheap or easy!!

something else, major corporations care only about bottom line and NOT people, they have expensive corporate lawyers and tax expert to ensure they do everything possible to get resources for nothing and pay NO tax!! For example, the mining giant Glencore (with $145 BILLION turnover) has avoided paying $120 MILLIONS to the Zambian treasury despite having been operated Mopanj since 2005!!

Believe you me,I share your sentiments but I am speaking as someone who works in the financial industry and has witnessed multi USD billion transactions!!

  25. Munalian

    January 9, 2012 at 10:56 am

    @cn,
Google “Glencore in Zambia” and read the entries you get just on page 1!!

You will find that Glencore’s tax avoidance scheme is so elaborate that the sale or Zamtel is small fish in comparison!! This is however no excuse for the alleged fraudulent sale of the telecoms company!!!

Not be scared that Lap Green will fight to the bone. Let the sue us, we pay the costs but ZAMTEL will revert to Zambia. Talking about investor shying away from Zambia..those are always talks in the corporate world. Whats important is the ZAMTEL was fraudalent sold and it must be re-visited if possible sold properly at a profit. These companies are all part of the Zambia’s collateral. Lap Green is blowing its trumpet far and wide, it can’t claim that it belongs to the Libyan People, how and where in this world is such a statement ever made?Even where one buys 99.9% you cant use such as a statement. ZAMTEL is a Zambian Company what Lap Green owns is only 75% and as such as to operate within the Zambian laws. Lap Green has no right to threaten Zambia…what it must do is negotiate given that theres a report that it acquired the company below its true value. Look at Zimbabwe, the companies are now following the law but parting away with 49% they not issuing threats because they understand that the law has to be followed. Even in USA, during the bail outs no company challenged Obama administration that whats its doing is wrong because they understood that there need to retain the nation’s pride. So when the PF government reverses the sale of ZAMTEL Lap green must just re-negotiate or alternative agree to retain only 51%, it given back to Zambia. Its illogical to buy a company worth close $100m at giveaway price of $31m. Thats why RB and his cronies must tell the nation why they in such a hurry as to dispose of ZAMTEL

Zamtel went for around 200 million under RB, KCM went for around 25 million under Levy whilst having pending orders for over 27 million. KCM, the worlds biggest coppermine, was grossly under priced, it was a single source bid, and it was and is a crime! KCM must be returned to the Zambian people, the rightful owners.

Sometimes I wonder if those guys in the opposition like HH,Chipimo Jnr, Gen Miyanda are for real. They never seem to champion anything that is pro the people. Their contributions are simply “I am clever and I have a gud career and education CV therefore make me your president”.In leadership its not only what u do that matters but also what you don’t do, case in point,KCM.How can you fall silent on such an unspeakable crime against the people of Zambia of now and generations to come. This is not investing but organised crime spear headed by Mwanawasa. And you gentlemen choose to remain silent. This is why in the words of George Kunda, “You will neva be president”.

    January 9, 2012 at 5:45 pm

The British South African Company, BSA, bought up Africa in a legal way as far as international law was concerned. They signed deals with Mpenzeni like chiefs gave them money and acquired the lands legally! After Zamtel is repossessed, what’s the next step? Mattanhi finds Indian buyer, just as he did for KCM, and its sold at a slightly higher price than lapgreen bought it for. Has the PF come up with a manifesto that states no foreign owned-non indigenous Zambian- company can acquire more than a 30% stake in govt owned assets? If not, then we will simply switch from one corrupt buyer to another corrupt buyer!
