DFID Gives Zambia K152 BILLION
The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) has revealed that it is supporting the UNICEF sanitation and hygiene programme in Zambia with a contribution of £19 million (152 Billion Zambian Kwacha) over a period of four years.
Mike Hammond, Head of the DFID office in Zambia, says poor sanitation and hygiene currently present a massive health burden, especially to children under five and women.
Mr. Hammond says with UK aid, Zambia should be able to meet the MDG target of halving the proportion of the population without sustainable access to basic sanitation.
He says the DFID assistance will enable 3million people in rural areas, including 500,000 school children, to access improved sanitation.
He adds that it will also help to increase the number of households that will be able to wash their hands with a hand cleansing agent such as soap or ash.
And UNICEF Zambia Representative Dr. Iyorlumun Uhaa says with the support, which is greatly appreciated, the organization will be able to work with the Government of the Republic of Zambia to accelerate progress towards meeting the sanitation MDGs, which will contribute significantly to saving the lives of millions of Zambian children from deadly waterborne diseases.Â
Dr Uhaa says the funds will enable UNICEF to support the construction of latrines in 1,000 schools, strengthen the private sector to help households improve their existing latrines, and introduce a national campaign to promote good hygiene practices at the community level.
He adds that the funds will also be used to scale-up Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), an innovative approach which aims to help local communities build simple, low-cost latrines rather than using communal open spaces.

This money is mostly spent to pay the so called experts who are part of the deal we sign with them. Their salaries are set by the money providers and in the end we just remain with a record that money was given to Zambia. Useless!

@MumbwaX2 Point On! The poor people only receive crumbs of that money after experts, workshops, 4×4 cars have chewed the bulk of the cash. Same approach same results. GRZ needs to rethink the whole situ.

Share sentiments already expressed…this so called “aid money” is nothing but neo-colonialism…sure q tiny fraction reaches its intended target but the majority is spent on “administration costs” and/or misused by local officials if/when it is allocated to them…
We should cease accepting it and find local ways to improve our socio-economic situation…that’s how India,Brazil & China
