We are ready to fight the Libyans over ZAMTEL.
And President Sata has warned that former vice-president George Kunda will be sorted out, calling him “dullest lawyer in Central Africa”.
In an interview at the Lanseria International Airport in South Africa Tuesday 1/10, Ppresident Sata dared the Libyan -owned LAP Green Network after the firm threatened to battle it out with the Zambian government over its purchase of ZAMTEL.
“Let the Libyans fight. We are ready to fight. If they haven’t fought in their own country to the bitter end….why didnt they save [killed ousted leader] Muammar Gaddafi?” President Sata said.
LAP GreenN manageement last week declared that the 75% shareholding in ZAMTEL belongs to Libyans, vowing that the company will do ‘everything Possible to fight for ownership of a majority stake in Zambia’s biggest telecommunication company.

Its unfortunate that those fellows sold a strategic company like zamtel, the international gate and the fiber optic.Hence our comms company is in the hands of foriegners.Hence those are bussines pipo all they want is money if any one pay them to handcapped the zambia comms wit any colosal amout of money they can just do that or likeage of information.Nowardays comms is the key to handcapped a country.see Iraq coomm during gulf war it worked,I think tere were no proffessional security personnells to advise that time, the interestr was money and sacrifice zambia. This is a sound warning wen selecting a leader of your country zambian,if u involve comparado bourguesses that is the result.

More POPULISM from a shepard and the sheeps can’t wait to follow him to perdition!!!
You complain that “no country sells its telecoms to foreigners” but ZERO Zedians own a single share of Airtel,MTN etc! Quite cretinous to bemoan about an ANOLOGUE technology (of the 19th & 20th centuries) while ALL modern DIGITIAL mobile technology operators are foreign owned!!!
Anyway…
Don’t the Chinese,Indians,Canadians etc OWN the copperbelt?? Aren’t they making all the money while you drink polluted water and masturbate thinking of Dora Siliya??
Don’t South Africans OWN ALL the shopping malls?? How many of you have a single share in Shoprite or Raphsody??
In any case…
UK’s nuclear power stations are OWNED by the French but life goes on…
London’s Heathrow,Gatwick and 8 other UK’s biggest airport are OWNED by a Spanish company…
The Pentagon has given some contracts to the Chinese firm Huwae but America is still functioning!!!
Wake up and realise that we live in a globalised economy where anyone can purchase any asset…it’s ONLY YOUR FAULT that you can’t compete in this 21st century economy!!
Sata has NO financial, military and intellectual ability to back up his words…he is just a DOG BARKING WHILE THE CARAVAN PASSES BY!!!

If they fraudulently acquired zamtel, what happens to the libyans money paid to the government and their money in investment.
Lets be careful fraudulent is one thing , dealing with a GOVT IN POWER is another .
The impression here is that the govt wants to get zamtel together with the libyans money .

THERE ARE MANY MEANINGS TO THE WORD “FIGHT” AND TO RELY ON ONE MEANING MAY BE MISLEADING!!! FOR EXAMPLE, A FIGHT COULD BE SPIRITUAL OR PHYSICAL, MENTAL OR EMOTIONAL BUT FOR THIS INSTANCE I THINK HIS EXCELLENCE PRESIDENT M C SATA MEANT LEGAL FIGHT, THAT IS TO SAY, USING LEGAL MEANS IN THE COURTS OF LAW MAYBE. THE IDEA IS TO ENSURE THAT TRANSPARENCY WHICH SEEMED TO HAVE LOST ITS GRIP IN ZAMBIA IS RESTORED AS WELL AS JUSTICE IS UPHELD. I THINK TRANSPARENCY AND JUSTICE WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US! ANY WAY, I THANK HONOURABLE GEORGE KUNDA FOR HIS GOOD STANCE ON PROVIDING A GOOD START IN THE OPPOSITION THOUGH HE SOMETIMES GOES BARMY. CHECKS AND BALANCES MUST CONTINUE AND I EXPECT PRESIDENT SATA TO ANSWER LIKE ONE IN POWER, HIS ANSWERS ARE STILL AS THOUGH HE IS IN THE OPPOSITION. HE IS THE PRESIDENT AND WE EXPECT ALL MANNER OF CLARITY ON NATIONAL ISSUES TO COME FROM HIM. IN OTHER WORDS, ANYBODY ELSE MAY SAY ANYTHING BUT BE AS THOUGH IS NOTHING BUT WHEN THE PRESIDENT SPEAKS IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE ESTABLISHED TRUTH, ENFORCEABLE AND I THINK THIS CAN NOT BE HARD IF THE PRESIDENT IS HONEST ENOUGH. ITS JUST A FIGHT FOR ZAMTEL AND NOT A WAR OVER ZAMTEL AND I DONT THINK LIBYA IS SO PETTY TO GO TO WAR FOR SUCH A MINOR ISSUE COMPARED WITH HER ECONOMIC STAMINA, ANYWAY IT SEEMS OUR PRESIDENT SHOULD TAME HIS LIPS IN JESUS NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Jo and Mrs. XYZ… LAP were warned at the time they decided to proceed with the transaction when there was mass public outcry.. They were told that the transaction would be reversed with no compensation in no uncertain terms.. The decided against the desires of the Zmabians and assumed the political risk of expropriation, an act they can take anywhere and receive nothing for apart from seizing zambian assets in libya and termination diplomatic ties if they want.. the took the risk despite being warned so will sleep in the bed.. it can only be concluded that the illegallyy influenced the transaction and illegal conduc that went with it.. push MCS.. Thats what the man in SOWETO, kwa George and Chimwemwe want to hear and see.. @ wisdom,
You can hurl all sorts or insults but what I said is factually 100% CORRECT; Zambians own MINORITY if not 0% in most industries:
Tourism & hospitality: major hotels belong to Indians and south Africans
Telecoms: same as above + 75% of Libtel!!
Mines: Glencore (Swiss),Canadians,Indians and Chinese OWN the mines
Shopping malls: 70% South African shops and over 90% RSA products in the shops
even Katondo Rd,COMESA & parts of Kamwala are OWNED by Congolese!!!
….etc
On the plus side,TUTEMBA are 100% Zambian-owned!!!
In any case…morals do NOT put food on the table!! That’s why Glencore avoided paying $120 MILLION in taxes and is still operating Mopani while you wank thinking of Dora

If I were LAP GREEN and wanted to continue running ZAMTEL I could’t have started threatening Zambian govrenment instead I could ‘ve humbled myself and ask the government of the day to see how best we can correct the mistakes made when acquiring ZAMTEL.
We are not saying that we don’t want investment but all what we are asking LAP GREEN is to do the right thing that will benefit Zambians as well.
Let us wake up fellow Zambians and defend what belongs to us.
Imagine one coming all the way from Libya, connives with Zambian thieves and later stands on top of the roof and carelessly say ZAMTEL belong to Libyan people…BULL SHIT.
Mwe bena Zambia bushe mukashibuka lilali?
That is why we need leaders like SATA (abaume)pantu bena nga cashupa ka democracy panse no kwisa kabwesha lintu ifintu fya bomba.
That’s why we did not vote for the cheap guy whose interest was just to enter state house steal money and start looking around for soft bums.So mwalakomfwa ka HH instead of supporting fwe bena Zambia on this issue, kala sapota Libyan people.
LAP GREEN shud know that this is our country and if they become foolish we can easily ask them to pack their katundu and go and operate ZAMTEL from Libya.

@DIGGA lol! we have been mislead on many national issues by social scientists especially lawyers and economists who thinks they are the only epitome of knowledge in this country.Just because they speak the loudest and have made billions of dollars from kickbacks through the looting of our country by selling off strategic companies like Zamtel, these characters should be stopped at all cost.It is a global village we are living in now,but that does not compromise national security. The sale of Zamtel only benefited RB,Dora Booty Siliti and allies not the people who zambia as they would want us believe. Let me use China as an example on why we should not play around with a strategic company like Zamtel. From this example you will understand why the Late Gaddafi was busy buying off telecoms companies in africa as a way of trying to control Africa.Very few people understands that Gaddafi was position himself like the chineses for global politics by investing massively in Africa and this was not just a mere good gesture but a strategy to win support from his fellwo corrupt african leaders like RB.Telecommunications as a “Strategic” Industry in China Telecommunications is one of seven “strategic industries” in which the Chinese government seeks to maintain “absolute control” (meaning over 50 percent ownership). The government also wishes to maintain a dominant presence in six “heavyweight” industries through regulation and government control. These industries are as follows:
Strategic Industries: Heavyweight Industries:
(1) Armaments (1) Machinery
(2) Power Generation and Distribution (2) Automobiles
(3) Oil and Petrochemicals (3) Information Technology
(4) Telecommunications (4) Construction
(5) Coal (5) Iron and Steel
(6) Civil Aviation (6) Nonferrous Metals
(7) Shipping
The Chinese government has actively sought to cultivate state-controlled “national champions” companies in these sectors. It has also offered state support to companies in its “strategic” and “heavyweight” industries, such as land and energy subsidies, favorable tax policies, and below-market interest rate loans issued from state banks with reduced or no expectation of repayment. The PRC’s “national champions” are a centerpiece of the government’s “going out” strategy to cultivate state-controlled firms capable of competing in the international marketplace. Some large Chinese companies, such as the telecommunications firm Huawei and the computer manufacturer Lenovo, retain a “hybrid” structure as “national champions” that receive favorable treatment through close government ties while also enjoying the freedom to operate as private companies domestically and abroad without bearing the onus of government ties.I will come back for more so that people like Mrs XYZ can be educated………not schooled!

There is a manner in which the President is expected to apply himself especially when dealing with international investment issues as well as other multilateral relations with other states. Its pathetic looking at the way our entire President MCS responded to Libyans over Zamtel as reported above. While I agree that the sale of ZAMTEL was not in any sense a good idea, worse still the price it was sold for, I am convinced that there surely is a better avenue to reason with the Libyans over this matter so as to ensure the bilateral relationship between our countries are sound and of continued benefit.
However, the onus is on us Zambians to ensure that all the assets that our country is identified with are protected at all cost from irresponsible actions from our leaders, like the way MMD did with ZAMTEL and other companies. Therefore, the decision to have Zamtel repossessed should be supported so that in future our leaders will not make decisions in an improper manner. And if there is anything which propelled the transaction of this institution rather than in the best interest of the Zambians, then bring all the culprits to book regardless who it is.
God Bless Zambia.

I suppose it was not the selling which was bad, its the manner in which the copmpany was sold which has resulted in all these intulubundi. @ Munsele,
Let me share something about capitalism and globalisation:
Capitalism is about maximising profit for shareholders at the expense of everyone else! That’s why SWEATSHOPS exist all over the world to make cheap products!!
Investors always look for bargains (who doesn’t??), that explains why the libyans paid the bare MINIMUM for Zamtel!!
The global economy is such that people, goods and capital go wherever there is opportunity!! The fact is Zambians do NOT have the capital and technology to improve Zamtel!!
In conclusion,Sata is playing the POPULIST & PATRIOTIC card but he knows (ought to know) that it is all EMPTY RHETORIC!!

@Benghazi Resident..Let me tell you something about one of the chinese companies you mentioned in your first post, and this company is HUAWEI.By the way,we may not worry so much about mining companies because their operations does not border on national security in a way,but as for Zamtel, the national security has been compromised. Now let me come back to Huawei,Huawei operates as an employee-owned company; however, its management structure is opaque, and media sources have raised questions about the true nature of the company’s ownership. Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., is itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Shenzhen Huawei Investment & Holding Co., Ltd. The company’s employee shareholding program is managed by a shareholder body called the Union of Shenzhen Huawei Investment Holdings Co., Ltd., whose governing board is made up entirely of senior company officials. The company’s shares are not freely traded but rather allocated to employees annually as incentives. Only employees within China can hold shares, and they must sell them back to the company if they leave Huawei’s employ.
Allegations of Threats to Communications Security
Huawei has also been the subject of questions regarding the nature of the company’s management and its alleged close ties to the Chinese military. Some analysts have challenged the assertion that Huawei is an actor operating independently of the Chinese government. Noting that “both the [Chinese] government and the military tout Huawei as a national champion,” an analysis by the RAND Corporation states that:
“…one does not need to dig too deeply to discover that [many Chinese information technology and telecommunications firms] are the public face for, sprang from, or are significantly engaged in joint research with state research institutes under the Ministry of Information Industry, defense-industrial corporations, or the military… Huawei was founded in 1988 by Ren Zhengfei, a former director of the PLA [People’s Liberation Army] General Staff Department’s Information Engineering Academy, which is responsible for telecom research for the Chinese military. Huawei maintains deep ties with the Chinese military, which serves a multi-faceted role as an important customer, as well as Huawei’s political patron and research and development partner.” In terms of Zamtel, this what we are talking about from a security point of view…….More!

@ prof Michael chilufya Sata,
What you are saying about China’s strategic industries is correct but you are ignoring that the “closed” Chinese model & market has led to retaliations, for example:
The US Congress blocked Huawei from purchasing a company involved in cryptography
The Germans refused to renew a contract to build Magnetic Levitation “Maglev trains” because the Chinese stole their IP -Intellectual Property rights and used a local company to extend the Maglev train routes
China was also implicated in the theft of Renault’s electric cars techno…
It is VITAL for certain industries to remain in local hands for “national security” but most industries need foreign capital and technology in order to flourish!! In any case,Zamtel was hardly a “strategic” company, its core business is fixed lines (analogue technology) that has been superseded by modern mobile technology! Besides,i don’t think it was involved in any kind of research that would be of “national interest”! Nevertheless, that does NOT hide the fact that it was fraudulently sold!!
Something else, selling “national assets” to foreigners isn’t always bad, it depends on who that foreigner is; for example:
UK’s nuclear power stations are owned by France’s EDF…but France & UK are allies despite regular petulant outbursts
The UK govt just handed a £1.5 BILLION contract to the German engineering firm Siemens! Many British MPs and companies cried foul but there was nothing the UK Govt could do because Siemens had the best bid
Airports like Heathrow,Gatwick etc are owned by the Spanish company Ferrovial, again nothing the Govt can do when there are problems with the airports….
All these UK examples show that it’s acceptable/ok to sell “national assets” but NOT to your worst enemy!!

January 11, 2012 at 2:43 pm
@ prof Michael chilufya Sata,
1) I think we all agree that the sale of Zamtel was fraudulent…
2) on the technology, I doubt if the Zambian economy and/or govt has the money to overhaul Zamtel obsolete technology. The fact is setting up a “future proof” fibre optics architecture in the biggest and most dense regions (Lusaka & copperbelt) could cost upwards of $500 MILLIONS! with this in mind,my University lecturer was of the view that setting up 3G and HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) networks was preferable and cheaper for Africa because it doesn’t have a legacy of fixed lines!
I tend to agree with him because people in remote areas like Shangombo have mobile phone access but no fixed lines; they can therefore get “mobile broadband” via Bluetooth and tethering.
3) on the business side, the Zambian economy/govt doesn’t have the hundreds of million dollars needed for recapitalization the company…besides why do that when the private sector has invested in mobile network (that has near universal coverage)!!

Can you imagine that ZTE is a china’s parastatal company and now is international including it’s beanch in zambia- for keeping their properites well and jealously protected china is world’s biggest economy today. Have you ever heard china privatising/ selling it’s companies to foreigners? Zambians saying “Sata is wrong” when he is trying to do this for you and your children. What kind of a country will your children live in when they find that the government owns nothing in the it’s own country. The givernment must the country’s biggest employer but how will they be if all givernment owned industry are sold to foerigners? Believe me if we dont do something about it now this country wont be owned by zambians in a few years to come coz every citizen will want to leave this country for another run by mature politicians than these childish we see in this country like GK. we love zambia as our own but foolish and childish leaders like GK, RB, and others makes us all dislike zambia and wanna leave.
