OPPOSITION Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) national secretary Richard Kachingwe has agreed with republican Vice President Guy Scot’s line of thought for ruling parties to stay in office for only ten years to avoid complacency.
Major Kachingwe tells Qfm in an interview that there is need for a party that is voted into government to work to the expectation of the voters.
He has however said if people have faith and confidence in the party’s policies and developmental programmes, it is justified for a party to stay in government for as long as people want.
Major Kachingwe, whose MMD party ruled the country for 20 years before relinquishing power last year following an election defeat, has advised the Patriotic Front government to pay allegiance to the people who put them in office.
He says failure to honor their campaign promises will cost them in future elections as Zambians cannot be taken for granted.
Major Kachingwe has also called for the need to improve democratic systems in the country if Zambia’s governance systems are to be enhanced.

Guy Scott has seen it prudent not to take this country as personal as others have done. Thinking beyond the lines of personality

How I wish this can work in our country, the only problem is the people we vote into power are power hungry and selfish, greed.

Batili bo ndate – I disagree with Guy’s view. Does it mean the ruling party shud not participate in a general election at presidential level a 3rd time running? This means we will be forced “to choose” another party, good or mediocre, just to fulfill the 10 year rule. That’s a reverse to our democracy. And that’s why creeps like Kachinke are happy with that suggestion.

What Guy means is that if you can’t achieve what you promised the masses or what is in your manifesto in 10yrs, then it is better you stand aside and give chance to others. But VJ wants to go on and on, even in his dotage!

Ba MMD after u have served more than 10 years and you want your friends to serve a lesser term.If its a good idea why didn’t you think of that when you were in power

Twisting the suggestion. Why don’t we have a law to bar people from serving in goveenment for more than ten years? A political party can change it’s name after ten years and the same guys would bounce back.

@ Fair Player – walasa. If a party has good policies and implements them well, it can go on but all politicians must be given a limit.

Major Kachingwe and his M.M.D had 20years to improve democratic governance, and yet hoodwinked the Zambian people with a costly N.C.C.
He is right about one thing,Zambians will not trust the M.M.D back in government ever again;they failed and disappointed us with their total regard for the rule of law, administering this country with so much impunity,i was reminded of SPARTACUS,in the times of the Caeser and the Roman empire.
But the P.F is not vindictive, and will bring about wide sweeping reforms,in line with global trends.
As for the 10year limit,forget,its P.F,Nafuti Nafuti!!!!! Another 20years

Good thought Guy. Let us also think of limiting MP’s term to two. Some Mp’s have overstayed there usefulness and on longer contribute positively to national issues apart from worshipping the party president and dancing at airport

If the outcome of the Chasefu petition is anything to go by, then we can expect with some degree of certainity that the MCS led govt is indeed democratic and will not interfer with the judicial system. Similarly, we’d expect them (and any other party henceforth),to be democratic enough to allow the wishes of the people to prevail in an election and not tamper with the results. Therefore if the people are happy with the way a party has performed, why not let it continue for as long as the PEOPLE want it and it is bringing development to the country, even if it means being in power for a hundred years! If they are not happy, they’ll kick it out like they did MMD.

Such an arrangement wouldn’t work. That’s why nowhere in the World has it been proposed. Ba Kachingwe sees it as the only hope for MMD to come into power

Truly great leaders are measured by the lives they reached, the people they motivated and the legacy of their lesson that can extend for years to come, like ripples from a skipped stone across an endless lake. Without a legacy no leader can stay on.
What we see in Zambian politics is “Chiwamila Galu kuluma mbuzi not mbuzi kuluma galu” It seems to me it is good if you are the ones calling the shots and not you being on the other side of things. Lesson?..Never take the ladder with you when you ascend up there or indeed despise and abuse those that supported you, you may need them on your way down!

But what happens in the second term. Will the ruling party work hard and deliver to the masses when they know that they are not coming back into office however well they do? It sounded good to me initially but after a deep thought I think it is worse than what we already have. All we need is to put in place measures that will ensure that a party can be booted out of power easily if they don’t perform. A party that delivers up to the expectation of the masses deserves to rule until Jesus’ second return.

This is good coming from the vice president. Now can we ensure that the new costitution has a clause to limit the term of office to TWO TERMS ONLY for members of parliament and councillors as well .

We need to be open minded for us to see things for what they are. So what if the major agrees with the VP.Does it mean that when one is in opposition then you oppose even what makes some sense.

good to know that Guy scot said that. only someone(a lead) who has created a contemporary space in his heart beyond political motives would say that. right direction Guy Scot, next thing to do is to be pragmatic.
