ZAMBIA’S CHIPOLOPOLO boys have pulled off the first upset of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations when they defeated favourites Senegal 2-1 in Bata on Saturday night.
Emmanuel Mauyka and Rainford Kalaba scored in the first half before substitute Dame N’doye pulled one back for Senegal in the second half.
Chipolopolo dominated the match from the onset and crafted the first chance of the match in the third minute when they surprised Senegal with quick short corner, but Christopher Katongo sent his shot wide.
Zambia continued to look threatening on attack and eventually opened the scoring in the 12th minute from a set piece when Chisamba Lungu floated a deep free kick into the box which was headed across for Emmanuel Mayuka to beat Bouna Coundoul.
Senegal came close to recording a quick response two minutes later, also from a dead-ball situation, when Moussa Sow met a Mamadou Niang free kick with a glancing header at the near post, but Zambian goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene showed great reflexes to push the ball out for a corner.
The action was at the other end a minute later when Coundoul was forced to come out of his area to block Mayuka, however, Zambia continued with the attack only for Isaac Chansa’s shot to be blocked by Souleymane Diawara.
Herve Renard’s men doubled their lead 21st minute from a counter-attacking move which saw captain Katongo playing a perfect through-pass for Rainford Kalaba who partly rounded the goalkeeper before firing a low shot into the back of the net.
Newcastle striker Demba Ba was kept quiet for most of the first half but he did create an opportunity in the final minute of the first half with a brilliant turn inside the box only for his shot to be blocked by a diving Stophira Sunzu.

We played the first 45 minutes well but we lost it all in the second half with our midfield out of control. First half could have seen us score even four goals but anyway it was a good start. With the lapses in the midfield especially in the second half which saw most of our players tired i expected an introduction of Clifford Mulenga or Felix Katongo for Nathan Sinkala and either Mbesuma or Chamanga or Sakuwaha for our skipper Katongo Christopher. Chansa’s withdrawal was unwise in my opinion. Bravo to our defence, Sunzu was great and HH. Football of big names is long gone. Ba and his likes of Cisse are names only! Lads you really made my night a good one after suffering from malaria at least i could even jump to celebrate amidst my fellow Kenyan friends here in Nairobi who were supporting Senegal. Having watched the opening game between Libya and Equitoria Guinea I’m confident we can qualify to the quarter finals with a perfect 9 points. Libya is a thing of the qualifying stage, this time they are beatable. All we need to do is to improve on our passes, be a bit accurate. Bravo to Mayuka and Kalaba, the boys were just too good. My advice to our goal hungry skipper Katongo is that he needs to swallow his selfishness in football and release the balls to his free and open friends. When one scores it’s the whole team to be praised. Congrats boys!

Go flat out even in your second game. Lungu played well but he got tired and balls started coming in through his wing. I thought Nyambe would have replaced him and not Musonda. Renard should have introduced mbesuma and not injured Chamanga to keep pining the senegalese after getting out Mayukwa. Well done lads, we can do it. Just focus on Gabon 1993 as you play.

well done chipolopolo..the first half was clearly all Zambia..however our creativity in front of goal was so poor in the second half because more goals would have been banged in..but we saw our players go BLANK right at the 18 area..such mistakes can cost you the game..The substitutions did not make a great impact but i must say that Chansa looked tired and he needed to be removed..It will be important that the players handle the climate well becuase we could see both sides basically WALKING towards the end of the game..that was a sign of exaution and against Guinee we can easily be run down as they are acsutomed to the weather..otherwise it was a great perfiormance..and it was good to see the coach demanding more from his players..

the boys played well in the first half.the coach should learn to read between lines and see which player to substute. the boys were teried and all what the coach did was just watch them when the other team was substuting. he should have introduced four players as substutes, two strikers and two defence to add steam to the team.

Chipolopolo boys lets go for the top slot. Let us hammer the next opponents with precision even the libians we spared during the qualifications.Lets teach them a lesson this time.It is different ball game all 2gether.I wish i had some magical powersd so that the coach does not use chamanga.he is a liability to the team. He is a dead wood.

Impressive start,gud goz………….!!
My worry is wit the Muzungu Coach. His a suspect and must b investigated to see which side his supporting. How can he subject us to such torment by allowing the Mighty CHIPOLOPOLO BOYS defend the only two goals we are proud of the second half.
Teyikali, even in the previous Africa cup, he costed us because of these outdated tactics of defending after scoring to secure a change.
Ifwe tukakwipaya we musungu inga twalusa pantu u look like nabakubosha!!

Senegal Vs. Zambia, 2012 Africa Cup Of Nations: Chipolopolo Pull Off First Day Upset
Well done Boys.I liked the dance and celebration,DONCHI KUBEBA.,….ASHIIIIII
Zambia have put themselves in a brilliant position to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals for the second straight tournament with a surprise 2-1 win over Group A favorites Senegal. While Senegal have perhaps the best striking options in the entire tournament, the rest of their team didn’t look up to the task. The Lions’ midfield, defense, and goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul were all shocking in the first half, and Zambia’s two goals were well deserved.
Emmanuel Mayuka and Rainford Kalaba both provided good finishes, but their opportunities were gifted to them. Mayuka’s came in the 12th minute on a header, where the defense inexplicably allowed the 5-foot-9 forward to get his head on a ball on the edge of the six-yard area. The second goal came in the 20th minute, with the Senegal midfield nowhere to be found. Christopher Katongo had plenty of time and space to find Kalaba with a pass, and he finished calmly. Zambia would carry their 2-0 lead into halftime.
FC Copenhagen ace Dame N’Doye got his team back in the game with a great control and near-post finish in the 74th minute, but Senegal wouldn’t find an equalizer. Zambia did well to attack an unsettled back line and midfield in the first half, then hold onto their lead against a team that had no deal creator for all of their striking talent.

The boys played well and according to the game plan. We scored in the first half and we knew that Senegal would come to us in full force in the second half, so the idea was to be disciplined defensively and I think we did well. Conceding a goal was unfortunate but that was it, result is what mattered.
My hope and prayer is that the boys remain cool headed, avoid super stardom depected by Senegal and concentrate, we need to beat Libya Wednesday to ensure success. But our aim acually should be to remain top of the group so we can play second placed team in group B, hopefully Angola.
We should reach the semi finals, and after that who knows, I dont think there is a team we cant play in the finals at this tournament!!

Iwe chi bebeni bomfwe, in football there is northing like being saved by the bell. Football is 90mins plus injury time and if you fail to beat your opponents in that time there is northing like save by the bell no matter how good you were. simple math, if zambia had scored 2 goals and senegal 1 goal in 93 mins, whats the probability that senegal would have won and not zambia if another 30 extra mins were added. Use yo brains to think, zambia was trying to defend the 2 goals at the same time trying to score more goals but senegal had northing to defend after half time hence the turn of events after half time but believe you me if it a nil-nil at half time the game would have not changed much, zambia wud have still been dominating. Viva zambia

You are right! We have so many Zambia whose negativity is inborn. They can’t see where credit i given. We deserved the win because of the way the boys played. This lack of confidence in ourselves led us even to sale Zamtel???????????
Let us move beyond small thinking to having confidence in ourselves knowing that MWAMUNA MZAKO NI PA CHULU!!!!!!
