The Patriotic Front (PF) government has u-turned on the directive it gave through republican President Michael Sata to let the vendors on the street operate freely without being taunted.
Local government Minister Professor Nkandu Luo clarified the decision on ZNBC’s Mid Morning Programme Saturday 2/4 morning.
Prof Luo said the government and the vendors will soon sit down and clarify on the operations of street vending.
She further said her government never legalized street vending.
The PF government’s decision to allow vendors to trade on the streets has given rise to sanitation challenge.
The lack of toilets has resulted in some vendors using opaque beer packs to answer the call of nature.
The Lusaka City Council has since warned vendors of serious action.
Just recently, Council public relations officer Henry Kapata clarified that besides the increased garbage on the streets some vendors are creating a public nuisance by using beer packs as toilets.
He says council workers are having difficulties to clean the streets as they have to handle human waste.

We need sanity in the city.Vendors can still trade even in their compounds.
Those street vendors are a potential time bomb asumming there is a riot in town.
Now we have cadres occupying any space they find and make it their trading joint.
We cannot allow this hooliganisn to prevail over reasoning.

Lets create sanity in our street and let the Gvt find a trading place for those vendors, otherwise SIVINTU.

this move of allowing vendors on the streets is as ugly as the minister herself. did the president forget to mention this or did i miss it? at least he did complement Mr Tourism.

IF THE DECREE TO ALLOW VENDERS ON THE STREET CAME FROM THE PRESIDENT .THEN THE REVERSAL SHOULD COME FROM THE HORSES MOUTH. ELSE I SEE THIS MINISTER AND KAPATA BEING IN TROUBLE FOR BEING INDEPENDENT AND INSISTING ON WHAT IS RIGHT.

Nothing is wrong about street vending. All we need is to modernise it by providing them toilets and council must ensure their collect levy on daily basis so that they buy more refuge collecting trucks, employee more drivers and garbage collector then we will talk about more employment and more money in the pocket.
