The Copperbelt University in Kitwe will not open for classes next week following damage caused to parts of the institution by a hailstorm.
OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR
Rescheduling of the 2012 Academic Year
The Copperbelt University Senate regrets to inform both new and returning students as well as the general public that, due to the damage caused to the School of Business Administration block and the new female hostel, following a storm that took place on Friday 24th February, 2012, the opening of the University for the 2012 Academic Year has been rescheduled to a later date to be announced. The postponement is to facilitate for repair works to the two structures whose roofs were blown off.
The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted
Issued by the Office of the Registrar
Copperbelt University
Jambo Drive, Riverside
P.O. Box 21692
KITWE.
Issued on 28th February, 2012.
Heavy rains last Friday damaged some female hostels and the newly built school of business.
Copperbelt Students Union- COBUSU President Thomson Luzendi has confirmed this to ZNBC news.
The country’s second highest institution of learning was scheduled for opening next week.
Mr Luzendi says the decision not to open the institution was arrived at following a meeting this morning.
The COBUSU leader says the development has nothing to do with the recent hike in tution fees by CBU management.
He also says the bad sanitary conditions at the university had also necessitated the closure.

Who was tasked with the responsibility of supervising these chinese engineers kansi??? Or were they left to supervise themselves??
Over 9 billion kwacha thrown in the water like that! We surely need another commission of inquiry into such nonsense! Now the students have to suffer the inconvinience caused by such recklessness! How could only newly constructed structures be affected when the UNIP-old structures still stand???

Both CBU and UNZA need serious renovations and the government should treat this as an urgent issue. the current state of both institutions is totally unacceptable.

I am Zambian living in the US and I recently went home to visit.
I’ll say I was shocked by the state of the roads, so no surprise here that a roof would be blown off an expensive building just by rain – rain which is not at all uncommon to our climate. Someone really ‘dropped the ball’. Why is it that as Zambians we just see to accept the status quo? Why do we not speak up and demand better infrastructure? How do we change our attitude?

we need a commision of enquiry headed by the famous zaulu. meanwhile the hailstorm shall be called hurricane musonder. engineer calculate the velocity of musonder required to thrust a chinese roof. hence, by your knowledge of fracture mechanics, deduce the critical stress given a nomical stress of 200 mega pascals.note velocity in (m/s) and stress in psi
