The leadership of Zambia should not be the preserve of any particular region or tribe because all the 73 tribal groupings must be able to produce a President Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane has said.
It was time that provinces that had never produced a president of Zambia to participate equally in ensuring that they also produced a leader for the party and prepare the MMD for 2016 general elections.
And former Prime Minister and Army Commander in the UNIP regime Gen Malimba Masheke has said the current leadership is one sided, which is killing the spirit of “One Zambia, One Nation”.
Dr. Musokotwane said the current composition of President Michael Sata’s cabinet left a lot to be desired, saying out of 19 cabinet ministers 10 were from the same region a situation which he said had divided the nation.
“Check the number of people in President Sata’s cabinet you will find that out of 19, 10 are from his.
region and that is the worst one can promote. President Kaunda refused to separate Zambia using his discretion of appointing more from his region, the same was done by the late Chiluba, Mwanawasa also denounced tribalism and former President Rupiah Banda enhanced the one Zambia one Nation by appointing leaders from all the regions,” said Dr. Musokotwane.
He said once elected MMD president, he would adequately prepare the party for 2016 general election.
He said the current PF leadership had deceived the people of Zambia especially the young ones who had voted in numbers for jobs which had never been given to them.
“In Lusaka we are saying that this government is a gong’a government. It strives on cheating. It lied to young people that it will give them jobs within 90 days but it has never given our youths jobs. Therefore I will give them jobs because that is what I was trained for. I was trained for development but look at President Sata what was he trained for,” asked Dr. Musokotwane before the MMD officials responded arresting people and insulting.
It was time,he said, that Zambia had a leader from other regions rather than having only one region producing presidents.
And in a different interview Gen Masheke explained that the leadership should change for Zambia to enjoy peace, as had been the case since independence.
He said there was need for government to balance in the way the country was being led for everyone to feel the benefit of being a Zambian.
Gen Masheke noted that if the leadership was well balanced, he was hopeful that the country would have a well meaningful development.
Addressing Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) party officials in Mwinilunga on Saturday night, Dr. Musokotwane who is among the five MMD presidential aspiring candidates said there was need for Zambia to alternate the presidency.
“In MMD we believe in democracy therefore the leadership of the country should not be viewed as a preserve of a particular tribe or province. We are all Zambians and should contribute and participate equally in the governance of the nation,” said Dr. Musokotwane.
Meanwhile the MMD in Mwinilunga and Solwezi Districts have asked Kasempa MP Kabinga Pande to consider pulling out of the MMD presidential race to give room to Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane who they think can perform to people’s expectations.
Thomson Chipweta who spoke on behalf of the two district party officials said it would be prudent for Mr. Pande not to split the vote by withdrawing from the race.
“Dr. Musokotwane we are well informed that you gave Mr. Pande chance to contest as opposition leader of the house and he lost to Felix Mutati. So it is in our view for unity purposes to ask Mr. Pande to give you chance also by not to goi9ng ahead to contest the presidency because he will split the votes from this region,” said Mr. Chipweta.
Mr. Chipweta who is MMD Solwezi district vice chairperson urged Dr. Musokotwane to dialogue with Mr. Pande because both were the children of the same family.
Dr. Musokotwane is in the North Western Province to seek a vote to lead the MMD whose president Rupiah Banda officially retired from politics last week.
Dr. Musokotwane said he would work at establishing party infrastructure and human resource for development, adding that poverty and unemployment were the major problem the country was facing.
