Confusion Within PF AS Others Plan To Demolish Lusaka’s Three Shanty Compunds

Contradictory statements have emerged over the prospective demolition of three shanty compounds in Lusaka. On Sunday Lusaka District Commissioner, Ashell Kampengele disclosed that three shanty compounds Misisi, Kuku and Chibolya were earmarked for demolition to facilitate the expansion of the city.

But his colleague, Lusaka Province Minister, Colonel Gerry Chanda, has disputed the statement saying the plan of demolishing the said compounds is not even on his table.

And some residents in these areas have expressed worry over what will exactly happen. Misisi, Kuku and Chibolya compounds were all submerged in flooded water in 2011.

So many things at play here, a number of decent civil servants and shop keepers in kamwala and town centre stay in these compounds because of low pay. To cut down on costs, they simply walk to work. Shifting them to Mwembeshi, chibombo or chongwe will not make economic sense. Just thinking

Actually Instead of taking the people out of that place, Govt need to create decent townships in these compounds. The way people live now is pathetic to say the list. We can relocate some people for a period of one year – build high rise flats and then bring then those who want to return bring them back so that they at least have decent housing.

Why can’t the Government look for virgin land elsewhere for new developments, even if it means developing areas like Chongwe and chibombo.Just thinking.

Shanty compounds should be atleats a reasonable distance fron the central business district. This is not so with Misisi, kuku n Chibolya compunds. Though it is an expensive exercise, they should relocate all these people. But before embarking on such an exercise, good planning is cardinal…

I fail to understand what we want as Zambians. If surely there was a plan one would rather some virgin land is developed? Development takes place in stages and there is a need for a face lift of Lusaka. What should be of concern is that government should find people in these compounds some alternative well planned and serviced place not to insist that they should continue living in such deplorable conditions. The second thing to noted bis that these compound are illegal for the most part or at least they start of as such so the claim that people the land may not be true

i like the idea, bcoz shanty’s are dirty.i have told myself it is better to go to my home town(Mansa) than leave in these pathetic places in the name of living in the capital city. those people have got houses where they come from, they did not find themselves in these places but came from somewhere

THOSE PEOPLE ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE UNLESS THIS DULL GOVERNMENT MODERNISES THESE COMPOUNDS BY BUILDING 10 STORY SKY SCRAPERS THEN DIVIDE EACH FLOUR INTO SMALLER BUT DECENT APPARTMENTS FOR LOW CLASS AND HIGH CLASS.
people in those compounds (if re allocated) will not afford coming 40 kilometers to get to their jobs and spend all their salaries on transport.

The question people should be asking is: Do you want development or more shanty compounds?.These shanty compounds should be demolished and well planned modern houses built in place. People are dying every year because of diseases from over flowing pit-latrines and poor drainage.
