Commerce Trade and industry minister Bob Sichinga says he has no apologies to make over his statement in which he suggested that there is need for the country to start processing copper locally.
Mr. Sichinga says as long as remains minister in charge of commerce he will ensure will continue to push for the establishment of industries that will be able to process copper locally as this will contribute towards the creation of jobs for the over 4 million unemployed youths in the country.
The minister has cited ZAMEFA as one company that has been processing raw copper since the 1970%u2019s without making any losses.
He adds that condemning him that he is pushing for the bans on the exports of raw copper have misunderstood his stance.
Mr. Sichinag has noted that some mining companies are exporting copper to its subsidiaries at a lower price a situation he says has continued to distort the prices of copper on the market to the disadvantage of Zambia.
Mr. Sichinga was speaking last evening when he during a preview of AGOA forum 2012 ministerial trade and investment mission trip to the United States which is slated for next month.
The two week trip is being organized by the American chamber of commerce in Zambia and will take on board official from the ministry of Commerce, and Zambia Development Agency (ZDA.
And American Chamber of Commerce in Zambia president Greg Marchand noted that the said the trip is aimed at enhancing bilateral trade and investment between the Zambian and American business community.
Mr Marchand noted that trip would big the private sectors in Zambia and USA to discuss potential business joint ventures.

Its a good move but have the government put the necessary logistics for that or is it yet another wishful thinking on their part? As for those who are still saying ‘more money in our pockets’ I implore you to wake up & real quick! Last year under MMD gov I paid k100pin for the so-called carbon tax & this year under PF gov I paid k150pin! Thats an increase of 50% & yet taxes were supposed to be brought down so that people can ve more money in their pockets. Pure circus act!

When Kk and co created companies like Zamefa, Mwinilunga canneries, Mansa Batteries ..they had foresight. Look where we are after these same chaps who were in MMD, now in PF,did!! Ba Sichinga revive some of these industries and unemployment will reduce. Talking about copper and value addition won’t turn around the unemployment quagimire that has beset this country! Lets diversify from the copper dependancy and create proper jobs for the youths as your party promised in it’s manifesto. If you have no ideas to create employment ask the very youths you would like to see employed. Otherwise enjoy your newly acquired globetrotting and shut up.

If you look at the world today, the fight is over natural resources. Countries that have them should maximum revenue from them because these are wasting assets and invest in other areas. If you and me will live long enough you will see how peaceful the Mideast will be after the oil reserves are finished. ZAMBIA SHOULD MAXIMUM REVENUE FROM COPPER OTHERWISE WE WILL JUST HAVE OURSELVES TO BLAME. COMPANIES THAT ARE RUNNING THE MINES HAVE NOT COME TO DEVELOP ZAMBIA THEY HAVE SIMPLY COME TO GET OUR COPPER. LET US WAKE UP.

And then you expect to sale that finished product where ? In short our market is small remember these guys have large markets hence what remains is what they export. Now imagine you bring a toyota plant to make cars and sell where since evry one is busy buying second from japan its not workable just say let’s make what we can consume here period

The fact that Zambia has be a leading copper producer in the world for so many years and is not a major player in terms of processing and manufacturing copper products is shameful. Not only can this move create very essential employment for the masses but also high quality employment for graduates who will stop running away from Zambia. LET’S GO BOBBY

That’s a good move. Unfortunately it will only end up in talking coz we can’t make it. I’m not being persmistic but it is reality. What ZAMEFA is producing is enough. We’ll have nowhere to export.

I support u Sichinga on this, but also please advocate more seriousness from the president and his other ministers. We want real development as establishment of industries to process our raw copper. Thumbs up to you. The success of PF is everybody’s whether PF or not.

Those opposition Sichinga are sleeping and there’s no sensible Zambian that will waste their time waking them up. Every African country that’s rich in any natural reasource of a kind is pushing for LOCAL BENEFICIATION of raw materials to create jobs and eradicate poverty. These processing industries that Sichinga is talking about will require good infrastructure such as roads, telecommunication, office and residential accommodation that will benefit Zambians at large. The tax base will also grow, so why even attempt to think of oppositing this , if you’re in your right senses?
