Govt Recruits 2,500 Health Workers

Government has disclosed that it has from April 2012 to date recruited about 2,500 health workers at a cost of K77 billion.

Health Deputy Minister Patrick Chikusu says the ministry also plans to open up a training institution similar to Chainama College that offer training in health sciences.

Dr. Chikusu says this will help the government address the shortage of manpower currently being faced in the health sector.

Dr. Chikusu who has been touring health facilities in the country says from the tours he has undertaken so far, he has learnt that there is urgent need to address the staff shortage in the health sector.

He adds that the PF government has in the 2012 budget set aside some money meant for in-service training.

Dr. Chikusu was speaking to QFM news in an exclusive interview.

And Dr. Chikusu has also said that health personnel working in the Diaspora have expressed interest in taking up jobs in Zambia currently being advertised by the ministry of health.

He says the ministry has so far received applications from Zambian medical officers working within the southern region and those in the western countries hit by the effects of the global recession.

Dr. Chikusu has attributed the interest by the Zambians health workers to return home to the improved conditions of service being offered by government.

He says workers in the health sector are able to access mortgage loans among other improved conditions of service.

@ven: no mata wat you do, you cannot take the village out of the once upon time village. ven, i guess you were once a kaponya (or now you are an educated kaponya). let me educate you further. 1 nurse has to take care of 4 non-critical patients at a time. critcal patient need a nurse in attendance. go to yo nearest clinic and find the ratio of nurses to patients. its way over 1 nurse:20 patients!! this is why you get sub-standard care.in most work place, target is the order of the day. health workers, do they have a target? you guys get sick everyday!!! THINK

There will never come a government that everybody will be pleased about..Not sata,hh,kavindele, nevers or who ever, has the power to bring down paradise.Jst like my beter 2morow lies in my hands and how hard i work, also the beter Zambia lies in how hard and productive we are individualy..and colectively contribute to the nation at large. We can not have lazy youths who jst wait 4 mo money in their pockets but neva want 2 b productive. the govrment is however ther 2 provide the playing field, but if it doesnt.. wil you fold yo arms and sit..fellow youths lets put in the best we can or atleast die trying

This is not really something to write home about. Our problem is far much more serious than employing 2,500 health officials. Our problem is the improvement of conditions of work. Please pay every Zambian civil servant what they deserve and the problem of expats in the diaspora will be resolved. Everybody will be heading home. It is about conditions of service, not numbers.

There is no excuse for poor performance. Whether 20, 30 or 5 patients a day, the level of service should be tht charaterised by efficiency. @STIGMA u say the ratio is 1 to 20 or more(not actually sure where u get thoes statistics)but based on this, in an 8 hr working day, give or take lunch hours, that’s over 20mins of personalised care per patient! Have u ever been to the casualty ward nd seen nurses sitting drinking tea (beacause it their tea time) with a critically bleeding patient waiting in line? If u hv taken time to visit our hospitals, u will realise tht ur point is somewhat shallow. Yes, we need more man power, but more importantly, we need a change in mindsets of our health and care givers. Mother Teresa started alone in india nd made a world of difference. And Even though I would not wish to repeat the words of @VEN I agree with the general gist of the post. The wip needs to be cracked…HARD! Continue the good work PF.

I welcome and applaud the efforts by the government to bring in health workers from the Diaspora. This will enhance the health care no doubt and improve the quality of care.

Recruiting staff alone will only work if the government also improves facilities and equipment in parallel. There is nothing worse than being world class, very well trained and experienced in your job only to find the facilities and equipment are totally inadequate. This one single factor can make the whole government exercise expensive and ineffective.

The fact that health workers abroad are interested in returning home should not mean that they will simply accept to be sent to rural hospitals where there are no drugs, poor or nonexistent clinical facilities both for health workers and patients alike. These are proud professionals who want to do a good job.

We can bring them back but if we wish to sustain the recruitment campaign and ensure it is successful we need to ensure that the first recruits have a good “Candidate experience”. i.e. able to “Sell the experience” to their friends who have not yet made the move. If however the first experience is disastrous, the campaign will have stalled before it has started because bad news travels even faster.

Professionals like Doctors, graduate Engineers, Lawyers, Lecturers and Scientists are very marketable globally and would quickly make another exodus.

They do not want to leave the country, they just want to work in a professional environment and the government has now sown seeds of this development.

i work in a busy health institution which is well organised which a well motivated workforce. i want to agree with some of you guys that we need to change our mindset and the general public need to do their part: to STOP CHEATING. a normal person, let alone a medical professional, can’t ignore some1 bleeding for a cup of tea. a first aider knows ABC rules. health workers spend 2 to 7 years in class learning and its unacceptable to come out blank… and also bring your relatives in good time, not when they are finished then you want us to perform miracles… otherwise… leopard’s hill is the right place for them.
    thanks
