Editor,
Are online Social means of communication bad? Is the incoming of Google Engine and Yahoo among others bad? I believe not, but this is not so with some Zambians. We are abusing these good means of upgrading ourselves. All we see on some pages (Facebook/twitter/etc.) is the culture of insults. Indeed, “Some Africans in the plight of wanting to follow Individualism have lost it. We are communal people.” What we say or do does not only disturb us but all around us.
Please, can we Zambians paint the good picture of ourselves? Can we offer positive criticism on these networks? Can we use the social means as means of communication in a good manner? Can we as Zambians use these online services to develop our country Zambia? Can we use it to voice out what is affecting us? Are we going to paint our 48 years of independence with insults? Why should we do that? Why should we even reach the stance of insulting the head of State or any person whatsoever? These and many other questions bother many of us. We fail to defend our Country Zambia because of this culture of insults.
I keep wondering why some Zambians are missing Social Media networks. I wonder why they even go online to offer insults. What has come out of this Insultous Generation of some Zambian Youth?
We need to be grateful to the originators of these Social Networks that it has reduced the misuses of paper. All is at a blink of any eye. I doubt if the intention was to created means of people to offer insults. It is very shameful whenever those in diaspora are reading the news that the mentality of insults is even on the lips of some Politicians. It is becoming a somewhat as Zambian trend. What is happening?
I strongly argue my beloved Zambians to use these power tools of communication to our advantage. We can do better with them. We are not to show the world what we are not.

THE OLD MAN MUNKOMBWE HAS BEEN INSULTED ENOUGH BY ZWD AND YET HE IS VERY CLEVER. I REMEMBER THAT THOSE DAYS, OLD GURUS USED TO REMIND UNIVERSITY GRADUATES THAT AND I QUOTE: “YOU WILL DIE WITH YOUR DEGREES AND WE SHALL CONTINUE RULING YOU”.
THIS IS TRUE. MANY GRADUATES HAVE DIED WITHOUT EVEN BEING HEARD! WHILE OTHERS HAVE LOOTED NATIONAL COFFERS AS THOUGH IT WAS FROM THEIR PERSONAL MAIZE FIELDS.
I THINK LETS GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE. HON. DANIEL MUNKOMBWE IS A CLEVER SURVIVOR AND KNOWS WHERE HIS NEXT BREAD WILL COME FROM. CALL HIM NAMES, BUT HE HAS MADE IT IN LIFE AND OUR GRADUATES, ON THE OTHER HAND, HAVE FAILED THE NATION!

sheikh osamabinladen, PLEASE READ WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS IN EXODUS 20 VERSE 4: “YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FOR YOURSELF AN IDOH FROM ANYTHING IN THE SKY, WATER AND BENEATH THE EARTH AND YOU SHALL NOT BOW DOWN TO THEM OR WORSHIP THEM BECAUSE I AM A JEALOUS GOD”.
YOUR BOSS WANTS TO BE WORSHIPED LIKE GOD AND GOD DETESTS THAT!!JUST GIVE HIM A FEW MONTHS. YOU WILL BE SHOCKED HOW GOD DEALS WITH SUCH PEOPLE. I THINK HE DOES NOT KNOW GOD. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO TEACH HIM TO KNOW GOD.
PLEASE PRAY FOR HIM, TO GET HEALED AND DELIVERANCE, AS HE WAS CREATED IN GOD’S IMAGE AND GOD LOVES HIM.

CUSHI ALSO SPELLED KUSHI a term originating from the Hebrew Bible, generally used to refer to a dark skinned person usually of African descent. Originally merely descriptive, in present day Israel it increasingly assumed a pejorative connotation and is regarded as insulting by Ethiopian Israelis and by African migrant workers and asylum seekers in Israel. In 2007 a judge of the Israeli Supreme Court stated that The term “Cushi” is considered, by the Israeli society as a whole, to be a prative term and an insult, usually meant to defame a person for his dark-skinned color, and to mark him as an “exceptional”, and as an inferior person to a lighter-skinned individual. It is a racist slur, meant to humiliate and degrade the receiver, solely because he belongs to the Falasha ethnic group. Therefore, the court found against a bus driver who used the term in addressing a black-skinned passenger [59] WIKIPEDIA

I suggest we have house rules like the UK online publications. These rules requires readers to see and understand different points of view, try to contribute to the thread, rather than just stating if they agree or disagree. Readers are required to explain why they hold their opinion although a witty one-liner is acceptable. Readers are reminded that heir comments are online and are accessible by anyone with internet connection. The comment should be clear to ensure that it is not misunderstood. Although one can express a strong opinion it should not be over the top. They are also reminded that they are legally responsible for what they submit and should take into account that many different types of people of different ages may view their comments. They are advised to be polite without using swear words or crude or sexual language. The submissions should be relevant to the story or topic and should not insult other contributions. Comments should not defamatory, false or misleading, insulting, threatening or abusive, obscene or of a sexual nature, offensive, racist, sexist, homophobic or discriminatory against any religions or other groups. They should also respect people’s privacy. You are not allowed to submit confidential or private information and should not write anything which could prejudice pending or on-going court proceedings of which they are aware. It is only when they have agreed to these rules that their comments are published. However, I will be the first one to admit that these rules would make the threads boring. It is just that they go over board and insult only certain parties and individuals in very crude and acceptable language.

I agree with Michael. All we see under every article are insults. The Zambians that are known to be friendly people, warm hearted, welcoming are not the same when it comes to comments on electronic media. It is a shame because the whole world is reading and the young generation thinks this is the way to be Zambian…

The insults are just too much! Tribalism is rife! If that is freedom of expression then it has no disciples among the sane. If you read the blogs in Europe there are arguments there but not so many insults because the websites have a way of controlling subscribers’ comments

FACT yes I agree with you because the world is very racist. The whites have perpetuated racism for such a long time that it is a struggle to let go of it.

IT IS A SHAME! And to make it worse and unfortunate, the shame lies upon University Graduates who for lack of terms are ignorant (ubututu) though they are learned persons. The ignore ethics, morals and the Work of God. It was not like so and it is still not like so in our culture. A dignified person is known by what he/she utters. Vise-versa a fool is also known by his/her utterances. Insults are not synonymous to Zambian culture but a show of a decaying Zambia encompassing even the highest placed honourables at the level party presidents. IT IS A SHAME! TULEUMFWAKO INSONI – E KUKULA MWE BANA BAKWA LESA (LET’S BE SHY! THAT MEANS TO BE GROWN UP PEOPLE, CHILDREN OF GOD). Proverbs 1:7 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; fools spurn wisdom and discipline.
