STUDENT Reflects On The 2010 London Saga

It was probably one step too fast, reveals Lyson Zulu one of the three London based students who played for Zambia during the ill fated international friendly against Ghana in London.
Speaking exclusively to bolayathu.com Zulu said he could not have declined the national team call because of his love for the country.
“When you get a chance to represent the country you can never say no. I love my country and could not have said no,” he said.
Zulu, who holds a degree in sports science, was a student at Loughborough University in August 2009 when Zambia lost 4-1 to Ghana in London in a game that saw Zambia field three students after failing to mobilize national team players on time due to an administrative hit in visa applications.
He said that national team coach Herve Renard called him a night before the game to join the team.
“At the time the Zambia national team coach called me I was on trial at Loughborough University where they had told me if I make the grade they will be paying my university fees. I was told I had made it and would be playing on Tuesday night,” Zulu said.
“Thirty minutes later I was called by the Zambia coach so we agreed that I would feature for my country the following day after playing for my club.”
Zulu said he was happy to have adorned the Zambia jersey and lining up against world beaters like Sulley Muntari, Stephen Appiah and Michael
Essien.
“A lot has been said about that game but regardless of the circumstances I am happy to have represented my country. Playing against the likes of Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien was a great experience,” he said.
The other two students that featured were Kasase Kabwe and Lengwe Kapotwe.
Zulu played 90 minutes while Kabwe and Kapotwe were substituted for late arrivals Emmanuel Mayuka and William Njobvu respectively.
