SATA Uses PERSONAL MONEY To PAY His Hotel BILLS

PRESIDENT Michael Sata on Saturday personally paid lodging and food bills to Sun International Hotel’s Royal Livingstone for over an hour’s use of the resort.

After a closed-door meeting with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe who arrived by road from Victoria Falls Town, President Sata joked about President Mugabe’s security detail, saying he was better off sending an envoy.

A hotel worker who sought anonymity said the President’s gesture to personally pay the bill was a sign that he was allergic to corruption.

“What we used to see is that when president Rupiah Banda, Levy Mwanawasa or other senior government officers came for official duties, we were taking the bill to either the PS permanent secretary or the DC district commissioner and we saw a lot of inflations in the original bills being taken out to them and not come back. Sata is really doing the ‘Don’t kubeba’ style,” the hotel worker said.

And President Sata when presented with two bills – one in a brown envelope and another in a hotel folder – queried the hotel staff over the authenticity of the bill.

“What is this?” President Sata asked a Royal Livingstone guest relations officer with the name tag Lydia Namukanda.

“Can you please give me a bill? The problem is that when you young men take off your hair, you also take off your brains. Who is the manager here?” complained President Sata.

President Sata then demanded an audience with the resort manager and mistakenly called out to a tourist before resort manager Giulio Togni approached.

President Sata who was by the driveway at the resort later walked over to the hotel front office desk where he personally paid the bills accumulated by journalists, security and protocol officers from Zimbabwe and Zambia.

And when asked on the agenda of President Mugabe and Sata’s meeting, George Chellah who is the President’s special assistant for press and public relations said a communiqué would be issued later from Lusaka.

“The meeting was cordial and fruitful and we will give the details by 18:00 Saturday when I get back to Lusaka,” Chellah said.

And scores of tourists jostled and begged to get a picture of President Mugabe who left at 16:06 amid tight security.

“Why did he come here like that? He should have sent someone,” President Sata joked as he proceeded to pay the bills.

President Mugabe was seen off by Southern Province deputy permanent secretary Alfred Chiingi and police commissioner Brenda Mutemba before President Sata walked over 150 metres from his hotel suite to the lobby.

you are talking of one day stay…a pure publciity stunt!
why doesn’t sata come out in the open and state that he was paid $5000 per month to stay in rhodespark…and also tell us how much the renovations cost!
then on top of that let us know how much bye-elections being cause by intimidations and political manouvering are costing!
in his own words, the trips and stays are budgetted for!!!

Does it matter whether he does it himself or what, as long as it is govt money, its still a state expenditure.

And why was he abusing the people who took him the bill, what an insult ‘you take off you brain with your hair’….can that poor person sue the state for being subjected to such crude insults please.

Its not the job of a President to pay small bills. Let him start working other than pretending to be doing so. How much is goverment spending on the ministries without him checking those details. The man should know his job descrition other than doing foolish things. What kind of a President is this man? You job is to grow the economy and not policing everything. Dont you realise that you are taking us nowhere?

Chi Monkeys in a maize field is toooooo ****** to understand that Sata is sending a message to the hotel not to play around with his bills. This was Sata’s private trip, he accumulated a private bill and paid it. Mwefisushi mwe.

Every blogger seems to have missed the point here, he was handed two envelopes a brown one and the official hotel folder! The staff stated that most bills are inflated. Do the math before you trivialise issues. He sent the right and strongest message hotel management will not be passing those extra envelopes any more. Anlysie the scenario before you comment. Are most of you bloggers bald or what?

No Iam in a puzzle. Someone clarify things for me please! If the President hosts another president he is not supposed to pay from his pocket. The government has to pay. Unless this story is written poorly meaning Sata merely signed off te bills personally but was still using, and rightfully so, the State’s cash.

Fellow bloggers, President Sata is showing you how some hoteliers were inflating bills. On the other hand, it is a timely warning to his Ministers and others to be on the look out as far as hotel bills are concerned. Wait and see how some extravagant Ministers are going to be fired. He is leading his subordinates by example. All those Ministers, PS, DCs and other senior govt officials who have eyes, let them see,and those with hears, let them listen.

Does the president understand his job description? does he know what it means being a president? i think its time he started behaving as a president and not like a commoner. by this i mean even his language. whaen he is in a public he should refrain from speaking bemba otherwise bakatusebanya ngabaya outside zambia and needing to address international meetings.
What disheartens me me is that the president, with so much for him to do, can stoop so low as to go and even ask to speak to the manager of that hotel and also even being disrespectful to that poor hotel worker to who he said ( if u take off your hair, you take off your brains too). honestly, thats to cheap for a president.
I am getting so worried that our president is just too ignorant and he does not understand his role as a president and the most unfortunate thing is that he does not have advisors because if he does, he wouldnt be doing the shamefyl things he is doing as a president. I feel ashamed to talk about him to my colleagues where i work in UK.

BTW,him using his personal money to pay for his bills is not a problem especially if he is not on official duty. If however he was there on official business, him using his personal money makes no sense at all and it means nothing. he shouls devise more technical and intellectual based way of dealing with corruption, perhaps he should contact his wife Dr Kaseba for advise
