Dear Editor,
“As a concerned citizen, I would like to raise up the issue of water crisis in most of Mufulira townships. The water services are now provided by a private company called Mulonga, ever since they took over from the council water supply has been very very poor. Pipes are dry and rusty but yet residents pay monthly fixed bills. When you go to Kamuchanga, almost every household has a well to draw water from.
Attached is a photo of a water kiosk in Kansuswa township where Mulonga sells water at K25 per 2ltrs. Why sell water and not just replace old metal pipes with long lasting poly pipes and everyone will have access to water in their homes for proper sanitation.”

Correction… Mulonga Water is’nt a private company but a parastatal just like ZESCO. The takeover from Council brought little hope to council areas until the takeover of former Nkana Water mine areas. What is required is to replace the dilapidated reticulation pipes and this requires serious billions of kwacha.Billions collected from mines should be used here in Mufulira council areas. Mulonga should not sit waiting for donors to donate but wake up and raise funds themselves even if it requires non remittance of profits to its shareholders, at least for recapitalisation.Cases of cholera and typhod because of the mixture of sewer and drinking water as a result of dilapidated pipes is unforgivable and lawsuits must be made for compasation as it happened with KCM

whoever wrote this letter has just got a bone to chew with Mulonga because what he has written is not what is prvailing on the ground. In kamuchanga there is a project running funded by the local govt and on kansusawa curently there is sanitation project running because the water project was completed about 2 years ago and Kansuswa has got a new water network with 100% metering to all customers. On water kiosks it is better he goes to Mulonga or NWASCO to find out how they operate instead of expressing his ignorance on this forum. I bet this guy just like free services.

Straight to the ponit. the article is right shimaini is pamugodi most of the times he does not know what goes on. From the time AHC was taken over the services from water reticulation comapnies have been bad. Kafubu water is one other culprit. What do you exepct from pipo who start work at 10hrs and go for lunch at 12:30hrs. We all know that a person is very productive for about 4hrs in the morning after which they start looking foward for lunch and about 2hrs after lunch. Let these pipo be on site by 8:30hrs. To much stoppages in their pump time do the repairs in night when pipo are asleep.

The quality of water is another challenge. Nkana Water, Mulonga and Kafubu ration their water. When supply is restored, you need to let the tap run for sometime, even an hour before clear water begins to run. Especially in the rainy season, you even wonder how we survive. The water is all much and mineral particles. Kafubu water has a foul smell. I never drink tap water from any of these places, no matter how long I stay. I have also noticed that there are some areas that do not have water always. Residents fetch water from nearby townships. People in Chamboli have not had water for 4 months now, especially those on higher ground. Suburbs in Kamuchanga have wells on every house! SS in Chabanyama has never had water since KK left. Some resident buy their own pipes to connect to sources where water runs. Location area in Kalulushi has a broken down sanitation system. NWASCO is sleeping. Atleast some parts of Lusaka have water 24/7

Mulonga Water you have failed to provide a good quality service to the beautiful town of Mufulira.I have been there since 1978 during RCM days. Water was not an issue. It was available all the time. The houses in the high cost had a geyser each. People would bath hot water, lawns were green all the year round. All this has changed. Now it is water rationing. Where on earth! This time when ever I visit my family there I find my citrus trees withered, taps dry, lawns look very dry. Those who operate private schools it is worse. SHAME! Why should it be like this when we now have qualified engineers? Things are really out of hand. We are made to keep water in containers if that day you are lucky. One has to carry a bucket when going to the toilet. Sometimes we do not understand the logic behind making announcement that there will be no water tomorrow so store enough when there has been no water for many days. Another thing is the low pressure that we experience if the so called water comes. It is not something to write home about. SHAME MULONGA SHAME.

@sucrose bulowe, I notice that you have twisted my name to mean something else. Whatever your intetntions, you know better. As for the water, people are still complaining. We don’t speak from without. I advise that you don’t use vulgar language against people you least know. It is good for you. It is easy to catch you if we wish. It also goes to other bloggers, you’re not hiding

Today, development in both in the Govt/Companies and individual Zambians. Objectively speaking, there is no single Govt that will rectify all the national problems in a year or two. Believe beloved Zambian this may take us three to four decades.
My suggestion is Mufulira residents let us see what we can do. Eg stop anyone from another place to destroy our Mufulira pipes for water or sewage. Two repair our taps and anything that is managable.
For the Company pull up your socks. This is a new Zambia. I hope you can read the signs. Failure to improve, you will out of business.
For the Govt, my sympathy but you must attend to this. We know you are underpressure. However you wanted this job welcome to the real world. Help our Mufulira friends asap.

The problem is the same throughout the country. The government needs to rethink about the future of township water supplies in the country. The faster, the better otherwise it will be a campaign issue in 2016.
Some issues related to this are:
1. Corruption in MLGH and these water companies. A lot of money is paid for poor or non existant services to their suppliers and contractors.
2. Top heavy management. Why have over 10 Managing Directors for water companies which are not able to make any profit. ZESCO has 1, we can do the same in this sector.
3. Poor policies for the sector. Why have; Dept of Water Affairs, MLGH, NWASCO, Water Board and numerous companies all draining resources meant to develop the sector.
4. Poor control in management of govt resources. Why have corrupt people been maintained in MLGH & other institutions involved. Audits come and go and nothing happens. Even some Auditors apper to be compromising.
5. Poor staff placement. Some companies and some staff in MLGH-Water supply section are totally unqualified for the positions they hold, and hence cannot change anything, save assisting to plunder GRZ resources.

@Ibrahim Patel, I agree with you to some extent. The policy to form water utility companies was to increase their efficiency. However, the opposite has happened. If you sink a borehole on your own, no one will bother you. But if you seek water rights and authority to sink one, it’s almost impossible to get one. All procedures and regulations are not facilitative but prohibitive. As a result, people sink boreholes anyhow
