KAMBWILI Blasts SCAW Zambian Workers For DEFENDING Company NUISANCE As He WARNS Employers

Government has warned of stern action on heavy Industries, companies allowing their workers to work without safety attire.

Labour Minister Chishimba Kambwili said government will not compromise on safety standards and will ensure that all workers are protected

He said Government hold in high esteem the lives of the Zambian workers and will do everything possible to see to it that they work in a safe environment

ZANIS reports the minister said this during a conducted a tour at Scaw Limited a company which is involved in metal re-moulding in Kitwe today.

He also chased away some of the workers after observing that they were handling metals without safety gloves.

He ordered the workers to go back and only report when the company acquires safety clothing for them.

He also issued a two day ultimatum to the company to address the safety issues and further urged the workers to report to his office if the company management fails to address the problem.

Mr Kambwili also castigated some Zambian workers and there supervisors for defending the company’s flaws

He bemoaned that the workers and supervisors were not giving him correct information during his tours regarding the companies’ condition of services despite them tipping him through the phone.

The minister who also toured Chambeshi copper smelter (CCS) in Kalulushi asked management at both companies to stop casualization

Mr Kambwili said his government does not encourage companies to offer workers contracts but urged them to put all its essential workers on full time and pensionable jobs.

He has since directed labour officers to closely work with the two companies and ensure that they put its workers on full time employment.

The minister has meanwhile urged management at Chambeshi to reduce on the trend of outsourcing Chinese workers.

He advised the company to instead help Zambian workers through technological transfer by equipping them with necessary knowledge to run the company.

He also urged the company to start giving its workers better salaries in order to motivate them.

Meanwhile CCS chief executive officer Yang Xinguo said the company is currently working on the need to start localization of labour.

The sad part of all this is that it is taking a minister to go and check on workers workers conditions and environment of work. What have the labour officers being doing all this long? I think Mr. Kambwili you are doing well – just be a bit more diplomatic.

The Managed Services which MTN Zambia did last year is coming to a close visit. Permanent staff were transferred to a Chinese company with no option but to join them. Conditions of services were reduced and Bank of Liato watched with pleasure. Watch the space, someone will dance “ndendeule”. Men at work…..

If he has seen any breaches to safety regulations, all he needs is to order a formal inspection and the company can be fined. Insulting and that kind of behaviour makes him sound like a low life.

Kambwili, you were misplaced dear. This is your right platform. Unions have failed workers in this country. They sit sipping coffee with management and forget to represent workers. Now the minister is doing their work. Good minister. This is the only way we can change the work culture.

Where have the Labour officers been. Kitwe has a Principal Labour Officer, a Labour Officer and assistants. They have not been inspecting these factories. Have they been bribed?

  19. jevin

    January 25, 2012 at 5:02 pm

Sir, ensure you clean up the ministry, you sort out your labour officers because these are people who go to these industries, see the conditions the workers are subjected to but receive bribes to remain mute. We want every one to start working now, Zambia will only be developed by us, corruption will just destroy even the little we suffered for.

Kono Kambwili wabona yo, ha! Ki likishi la “Mwana Pwebo”. Hawa, sindate sona kwa mileko hasiyo. Such extreme urgliness is really what gives credence to the belief that people are descended from monkeys and gorillas. With Kambwili, the guy seems to also have “gumu gumu blued head” roots, complete with the protruding “mang’ana” (gills). Had he not been a minister, the lumpen would be sweating lonely hearts columns, such extreme urgliness stinks, it’s shameful that one person should reserve to themselves such a monumental amount of aestatic unpleasantry!

I still cannot help laughing at the government’s childish reaction to Wikipedia comments that Zondwe was assassinated. Imagine if it was true just how all these Northern Alliance janjaweeds would have been “ku ipweleteta musululo mwa biziba bya mawindo”.

That’s a problem in Zambia we cannot let the minster alone to do the job where is the labour officer, Provincial Permanent Secretary, Provincial Minister who’s near to the area. Our country is wide. We can only solve this issue through our Immigration who offer them work permits and all Human Resources Managers through the Human Resources Institute of Zambia. All Human Resource Managers should be given the renewable licence in accordance with their performance towards workers after one or two years. Office of the president should also involve in this labour issue this are the people who can give the minister right information.

To be honest the labour Chiefs and their team of inspectors are a Joke in Zambia. Kambwili, I can complement your effor cause Zambia is Huge for u alone to Manage. The laws in Zambia are there, what we lack is enforcement. The Minister is now doing the Job of inspectorate wing. Fire them.
