Loose ZESCO Power Cable Kills 9 Month Old Baby

A NINE-MONTH-OLD baby has died in Kabwe after being electrocuted by a loose Zesco cable, sparking protests among residents in Katondo Township.

Eye-witnesses said the baby, identified as Priscilla Mulenga, died after she crawled over a Zesco cable which had been hanging loosely from a power pole in the parents’ yard.

The child’s stiff body was later found lying close to the live cable.

A resident, John Phiri, said the cable had been hanging loosely for a long time and family members would just jump over it whenever they wanted to use the bathroom.

“We feel  that  some  of  the workers  at  Zesco in Kabwe do not  mean well because  if they had  responded promptly to reports the we’ve been making, the  life of this child would not have been lost, “he said.

    This is very sad indeed,

The baby’s crawling over the cable was just the immediate cause of the loss, but there are a number of failures before the acrtual loss, obviously the major being the lack of control by Zesco management, firstly how did this cable snap in the first place when was is it maintained or checked for streangth or tightness, secondly the cable snaps and lays loose on the ground the matter is reported and no response from Zesco, clearly this is at a very large extent Zesco’s Manegement fault, and somebody should be held responsible, it will be a great lesson to Zesco if somone is charged with Man slaughter

So the rest of the family is jumping over a death cable and they would leave a little baby crawling around by itself?? Dnt be too fast in blaming zesco -of course they have a major hand in this but where were the parents? And everyone else? Utter negligence. What a shame.

I mourn with the family in spirit. I know the mother must be blaming herself but you can never be xtra careful with a crawling baby. They always want to xplore.
Zesco is to blame & they should pay for there negligence. Its unfortunate that a life had 2 be lost but this must b a wake up call to the mgt of zesco befor more lives are lost.

It’s such unfortunate and painful for this precious life to be lost in such a way. This family’s negligence has costed them, how cud normal human beings like these leave an infant crawling to the live cable? On the other hand Zesco is to blame. Zesco management should take full responsibility for this loss of life. They need to be seriously monitoring their lines especially in in shanty compounds like this one.

As much as we blame Zesco for negregence on the cable, we must also blame the same family for not staying 400metres away the pyrons. Let this warning extend to people of misisi compound who have belt their houses under Zesco power lines.

The reaction of most people on this issue just shows how shallow minded some people can be.
If the elderly people/parents at this residence were responsible enough this electrocution could have been avoided by securing this cable in any way possible in the first place. This negligence causes doubt if at all this cable was even reported to relevant authorities.
Did they expect the toddler to also jump over the cable? I seriously suspect this story not to be true.
The reporter and the picture are also very misleading.
How on earth can a responsible parent see such danger, jump over it and leave their children to it?

Like many public functionaries in Zambia, they only react after fatalities! We’ve lost an innocent soul because of the inefficiency of uncaring public
company Zesco, they’ll rush to cover up their carelessness. If I were the parent, I would sue them for every penny they are worth!

U can’t blame zeco for that. There’s a law that reqiures not to have plots under power lines. In fact people shud have plots meters away from these lines. Because of unplanned and illegal plots, such unfortunate incidences are bound to happen.
